This evening 4.20 to 7.40. My departure being delayed by the arrival of an itinerant birder, namely Mr Passant. The Lodge was quiet but some good sightings and good company for the last hour and a half.
Kingfisher (male)....1 perched in the willow by the water for a good 40 minutes. After Mike arrived it had transferred to a nearby stump and only moved eventually as a low flying Sparrowhawk went towards it. Nearby a juvenile Grey Heron was stalking in slow motion in the water. As I was about to make my first effort to depart I decided to scope the 'Redstart Hedge'. Straight away I picked a Redstart up, and followed it moving down the hedge.... perching regularly as Mike made his way cautiously behind it, down the path. Amazingly, at the same time 2 Buzzards (Juvs I think ) landed momentarily in the hedge above Mike's head.
To start at the beginning: As I arrived 3 Grey Partridge were relocating on the main field that has been partly harvested today. Common Sandpiper...2 Teal....6 Great Crested Grebe...5 Tufted Duck...1 Lesser Black-backed Gulls...3 juvs. + 1 adult seen with a spooked flock of Starlings. No Hirundines on arrival but Swallows coming in high as I departed.

The work is scheduled for a Sunday in late August. I hope the islands can (as well) be made attractive to waders again. North island has been ''let go'' as it has been thought it is open to predation when the water levels fall. This is not really the case. Let us hope that the shrubbery goes.!

to go with the dead Canada Goose that has been on south island
Stan the farmer has had a delivery of 5 tons of cockleshells. This is for a make over on the ''Tern Islands''
as Bolton Conservation Trust call them. The work is scheduled for a Sunday in late August. I hope the islands
can (as well) be made attractive to waders again. North island has been ''let go'' as it has been thought
it is open to predation when the water levels fall. This is not really the case. Let us hope that the shrubbery goes.!
