In Answer to John Watson post wrt Shooting Woodpigeon prior to harvesting...
In the example of Little Woolden Moss when the Woodpigeon descend upon the crops---professional hunters are brought in...and once harvesting takes place this shooting ends. With Respect to the Killing of the Woodpigeon I referred to (and being well aware of the 'woodpigeon' season for crop defence) the shooters here were in my opinion 'indulging' in killing for killings sake...even the farmer was unaware!...I have raised the matter...I await an outcome...any further comments please message me as I am aware our administrator would prefer such comments as these to have a specific thread...
I don't mean to start a debate on this thread, but shooting of Woodpigeon is permitted all year round, but only to prevent serious damage to crops. So it seems odd to use a lure to attract them into crops where the survivors can do more damage
And shooters' websites always point out how tasty they are, as if that's just a bonus. Hmm ...

1.45pm to 5pm - Moss Lane, Salford Trail along River Glaze to Little Woolden Moss N.R. west to east circuit & back via Moss Farm.
Blustery conditions in the open kept sightings minimal but an enjoyable walk nonetheless.
Of note :- About 50 Tree Sparrows feeding in a wheat field until a Sparrowhawk swooped in catching one.
Red-Legged Partridge flushed from the same field edge which also contained at least 1000 Woodpigeon & Stock Dove.
2 Mute Swans were on the River Glaze with 2 Cormorant & a Kingfisher flying down its length.
2 Hobbies escorted a Buzzard off the premises at the nature reserve with a further 3 Buzzards seen elsewhere.
Also seen Meadow Pipit, Long-Tailed Tit, Goldfinch, Linnet & Kestrel with many pigeon flyovers because of the farmers shotgun.
