No, it's not just you, Danny. There are a LOT of Goldfinch about - and very nice to see and hear them it is
Statistics from the BTO Garden Birdwatch survey show that Goldfinch is now the 9th most common garden bird - being found in 60% of gardens nationwide. For the period 1995-2010 it averaged only 28% of gardens and was ranked 17th most common species. Quite an increase!
Woodpigeons are also doing very well, as you may have noticed. and Bullfinches seem to be having a good time at the moment.

Driving home tonight I saw the surreal sight of a Grey Heron sat on a lamp post as I drove into Cadishead.
Also on the 'birds on lamp posts' theme as I am typing this a pair of Collard Doves are currently making this years babies on top of a lamp post outside my front window!
An idea for a new list? !!

Whilst at a friends house yesterday, her son told me he was going to Parkgate today with the RSPB,he showed me his bins (appalling)
l zoomed home to give him my spare pair, as l was on the way back, a female Sparrowhawk flew directly in front of my car headlights !! l was so shocked (and delighted) she skimmed the grass and arose and gracefully and came to rest on the roof of the terraced houses opposite. l drove round the corner, got her in my bins and drank in the view. Then she decided my time was up and she set off in search of her tea
She's becoming a frequent visitor near where l live and l'm very excited to see more of her this year

Had reasonable views of a possible Diver as it flew over our house in Lowton at 5.00pm tonight heading in the direction of Pennington flash. The bird was at a height of about 400 feet and was heading away from me but the jizz looked right for a diver and the wing beats were quite fast.

Buzzard sat on top most branch of a leylandii conifer in a garden in Warburton at 4.40pm. Saw one doing exactly the same thing in exactly the same tree a few months ago! (probably the same bird). The branch is so flimsy and bends down under the weight but it seems to provide a good vantage point over the surrounding fields.

4 Grey partridges on Low House Moor (Hill on left of M62 as you head up towards Junction 22.) In this same area I also put up what looked like a pair of waders but it seems too incredible given the snow and ice up there. I flushed them twice as I ascended the hill and each time one gave off a single note warning wistle of about one second. They are white underneath with dark wings - lapwing size but with slender wings. If anyone has any ideas as to what they might be I would be interested as I believe I have seen similar birds during other winters on the higher ground of Piethorn valley.
