Visited the Manchester area again today to try and nail waxwing photos as the ones the other day not too great. Perfect day, just no waxwings!!! Spent a couple of hours trying to locate them aroung oldfield road/ regent road and surrounding estates with no joy. Moved onto Salford quays area and then over to arnott crescent area. The berry supply in the estate around oldfield road has now been decimated. They must have moved on but to where? I only have till the end of the week to catch up with them, back at work on Monday!!!! Will try again Friday!

Great afternoon out with Annette eventually gave us fantastic views of large numbers of Waxwings as Annette has stated. We went over to Arnott Crescent and surrounding area first with no sign of them around 1.30. We then made our way over to Regents road opposite Sainsburys where we immeadiately saw a large group feeding in a bush right on the corner with Oldfield Road. This was around 2ish. We followed the birds into the estate behind and found various different groups. Interesting watching Mistle Thrushes trying to protect their food source. When one or two waxwings move in to feed they were seen off straight away but when 50 birds descend at once there was little the Thrushes could do!!! The final group we saw was the largest containing around 150 birds as already stated. There are various Berry laden trees/bushes with in this estate but we didnt see large enough numbers of trees to support such large numbers for long. I will be interested where they move onto next.

Seen from front window 5 waxwings on TV aerial and telephone wire, on Edenfield Lane, Worsley. Flew off in direction of Bridgewater Hotel, perhaps heading for the filtration lagoons alongside canal, where there are quite a lot of rose hips.

Incredibly large flocks of waxwings today between 1-30pm and 3.30pm on juntion of Oldfield Road and Regent road, Salford. Two large flocks very mobile (driven off constantly by aggressive mistle thrushes) but I counted at least 150 birds, possilby as many as 200. They made an incredible noise. I dont think I have ever seen so many at one time. Feeding was largely taking place in the estate behind but also in a garden on the juntion itself.

Waxings were showing well at 8.50a.m. though they were quite skittish. Two smaller flocks of 40+ and 30+. The area between Hebden Walk and Crowborough Walk behind first row houses on Arnott Crescent, Hulme, is where one of the white berry trees is located. though the top two thirds is now bare of berries. As we left we saw two more red berry trees in the estate and they looked untouched.

Arnott Crescent, Hulme. 10.45am-12.20pm, Thurs 29th November
We parked at first in Arnott Crescent and waxwings were seen several times in flight with the largest flock about 80 birds. They never came down to the tree with the white berries. At about 11.45am a group of about 40 birds landed in one of the bare trees in Arnott Crescent, stayed for about ten minutes and then flew off again. As we were leaving we saw a similar sized group of waxwings just around the corner at the junction of Boundary Lane and Flatley Close. They were in a large tree adjacent to Trinity CE High School.

120+ on Arnott cres this morning.Feeding well on the two trees with white berries, Mistle thrushes trying their best to defend the berries- to no avail when so many birds descend. To concur with Rob there are several people hanging around who I would come into contact with on a professional basis. People do need to be aware of their surroundings and who is watching them in most inner city areas- or some rural ones for that matter. The opportuinistic thief will take advatage wherever they can, common sense and awareness will prevent most crimes and even I took the decision to leave earlier than planned just to be on the safe side. No sign of any birds at the park in Ordsall but I saw 13 sat on the tops of trees on Goodiers drive on the estate. No berry trees nearby so they may return to the park later.

My first Waxwings of the year. Two of them in Heaton Moor Park in Heaton Moor at 8:30 this morning. They were trilling from a tree on the NE corner of the park near the junction between Peel Moat and Buckingham Roads.
There aren't many suitable berry trees/bushes in the Park, so they might not hang around very long. However, the berry bushes on nearby Derby, Broomfield and Warwick Roads will all be worth a look as the Waxwings fed here for two weeks in Jan/Feb 2011.

I visited 3x last week roughly about 12.45pm to 1.30pm ish, went on Saturday morning about 11.30am, waxwings were there everytime, Arnott Cresent goes round at the top like a dead end, so try every tree, they congregate outside a house up 1 of the alley walkways with a Rowan (Sorbus) tree but this is a White berry variety so find the White berries you find the waxwings. Depending on the winter conditions and the berry situation they should be over here until late Feb or early March but they may move on and spend a few wks somewhere else.
