Simon and l found a Tawny Owl being mobbed and harassed at Bolton Hospice this morning (10.30 am )
The gardener and receptionist were delighted to see it, both couldn't believe their eyes. Owls are the receptionist favorite bird and the gardener exclaimed..'I love you' when he found it in the binoculars !
Dunno if that was aimed at us or the bird

Could be, Jamie - I am referring to an area nearly Collyhurst - although I reckon that there will be a few knocking around - they've been spotted, even by myself, in the city centre, and given the commonness of the species there could be multiple birds. It's a welcome surprise, although - personally I'd prefer they kept out of cities given the multitude of dangers they face here :/ Sparrowhawks have obviously adapted to urban environments well enough, but my opinion is that the Kestrel, so akin to hunting as it famously does, is better off in the countryside!

A welcome 'bump' up of this thread
I never thought I was going to be writing this in my birdlog, but as I walked over Oldham Road at the junction of Queens Road near my house, there's a big swath of mossy, overgrown land - well a F Kestrel swept up onto a telegraph pole and used it as a lookout post, before flying over the road and dropping behind the back of Ladbrokes. Almost a garden tick

This is a late post from early last week (Tuesday morning, I think) - a Mistle Thrush going absolutely mental in a tree at the bottom of my road in Northenden, calling ceaselessly at a tree containing two Blackbirds, various tits and an unidentified bird, which I assumed at the time was a Starling.
Now I think back, maybe that Starling was a Waxwing! Certainly, something had ruffled the thrush's feathers and the Blackbirds were also hopping about like mad.

Unusual tick list of birds today on my usual walking route to work - instead of the more common blackbirds, robins, starlings....
Carrion Crow 2 Mallard 2 Grey Heron 2 Sparrowhawk 2 Wood Pigeon - many Plus the usual Black Headed Gulls and feral Pigeons
Bright and beautiful morning, but a distinct lack of small birds - except for singing robins. Maybe it was too cold for them to wake up by 0745. My route takes me from Lilford area of Leigh across Holden Road and past the top end of Bradshawgate to Tesco/Henry St area. My maximum species count for the route is 16 on one morning, total tick list so far 27.
