Another early start today produced 2 common terns (ad & juv.), eclipse mandarin off the car park and about 10 swifts over the ruck. About 50 adult and juvenile lesser black-back gulls in the middle of the flash.
There are now 5 very young juvenile lesser black-backed gulls off the car park, 3 of them still have down around their heads. They are all staying pretty close together and I'm fairly sure that there were only 4 yesterday, though they can be difficult to spot at times, especially if they are in amongst the mallards. The "new" bird is very much darker than the others (see photo). In three visits now I've not seen any adults anywhere near them, which is making me believe that they have been left here by somebody, perhaps a nest has been removed from a roof. It's a little bit hard to believe that all five of them fell off a roof and they have been rescued and it's almost equally hard to believe that five such young birds all made it here together without any adults. Which roof they are from is another matter.
Also today there seemed to be a movement of cormorants over the flash, from west to east. This included one flock of 24 birds at 7:30am which flew straight over and away east. Quite a large flock for mid-August I thought.

A quick walk around the flash this morning in an attempt to get back home before the serious heat of the day produced:
Little egret 4 in Ramsdales. At least 2 adults, the other 2 seemed to have pale legs so possible juveniles, but not certain because the light was harsh and viewing was difficult through the vegetation. This the joint highest total I have ever seen at the flash.
Swift 40 mainly at the west end.
Common tern 1 distant but it looked like an adult.
Perhaps most interestingly, four juvenile gulls off the car park, two of which it's barely believable that they could fly. I think that they are lesser black-backs and I'm told that they sometimes breed a couple of miles away so perhaps that is their source of origin, it can't be much further than that surely? Makes me wonder if the hot weather has prompted them to leave whichever roof they were on in search of somewhere cooler.
Yesterday evening, a juvenile Mediterranean Gull, juvenile Common Tern, Common Sandpiper and Little Egret.
