Popped down around 1pm but was in a bit of a hurry. Made a loop of the lake but couldn't see the scaup. Met another birder on route having similar difficulty. Tens of male pochard on the northern shore close in to the overhanging willow but couldn't spot the rogue amongst them.
Where have people been seeing him mostly. I should have more time to linger tomorrow. Hope he's still there then.
Beautiful day tho. Everything looking splendid in the light. Especially the goosander.

Yellow Legged Gull - For the benefit of birders whizzing off to Chorlton, Ian has checked my photos. The relevent committee will see the photos but Ian says he is confident it is actually an adult lesser black backed gull in strong sunlight which has given the wings a light grey appearance.

Hi Martin, nice to meet you too. Tom McKinney went on after us and could'nt see the Yellow legged Gull, but sighted a Lesser Black Backed. Depending on age this too can have yellow legs and did we get it wrong?. The bird we saw had a light grey back and I still think it was a Y L.Perhaps your picture can confirm this. I would be very interested to know, Regards David

Yellow Legged Gull at 2pm today,
viewed from the picnic area / lakeside area on the River Mersey side of the lake about forty yards out. David Pollard and wife spotted it landing and verified the yellow legs. I took pictures. For both of us that made up for the lack of a scaup which had drawn both of us to the water park today. Good to meet you David, and thanks for bringing it to my attention.

Had a stroll around the water park and Kenworthy area on wednesday afternoon The Pochard, Goosander and Mallard were all huddled up by the islands and occassionally venturing onto the ice. It began to snow again and I watched two Goldeneye literally crash land onto ice and flap like crazy to stop! The snow began to come down heavy but we saw a cock and hen pheasant on the Kenworthy side literally just ambling along together oblivious to us some 20 yards away!. The weather got the better of me and I left.
90% ice. All wildfowl centred on a small open patch of water at the west end of the lake.

24th January.
7.50 to 9.40 am.
Visited primarily to have a look at and enjoy the sight of large rafts of Tufted Duck and Pochard on the water and I wasn't disappointed. A cracking spectacle. My rough counts this morning were remarkably similar to Peter Hines from yesterday - 355+ Tufted Duck and 130+ Pochard.
Also 2 Wigeon (1m,1f) were on the water at first light. Also 3 Goldeneye (1m,2f), 1 Little Grebe, 1 Mute Swan, 1 Cormorant and 11 Goosander (7m,4f).
c10 Redwing at first light were probably coming out of a roost here? 2+ Lesser Redpoll, 2 Skylarks flew over and there were 2 singing Song Thrush - quite audible but some distance away from the water park. 2 Reed Buntings (1m,1f) and 1 Dunnock were on the bird table.
I heard a Willow Tit calling three times right at the western end of the water body and after a short wait was treated to really excellent views of the bird amongst the brambles there. I'm told by Peter that this is a site first and I just hope that it hangs around for other local birders to see.
Cheers,
Bill.
