Sorry to ask but which is the main car park - the one by where the rescue boats moor up to the buoys or the one further round after the right hand turn towards the reserve bit [its a while since I've been but might go for a look at the weekend as my other GND was at 100m range off shore]. Thanks in anticipation, Peter

One GND patrolling its usual beat near the car park. Saw no other, though the strong wind made the lake very choppy, so it was difficult to see much in the middle of the lake. I stayed from 2.45 - 3.30 p.m.

I see rain does not stop any of you lot We three went to Carsington searching for the diver on Friday, but it was not there that day but a least there are 3 hides which help on rainy days. Glad you are all having a good view. I think HL is too far for a quick look for me.
Nice pictures in the Gallery Chaps.

Yea! I'll bet you're chuffed - its a lovely looking bird - it would be nice if it stayed in the area till it was in its first summer plumage ........ I can dream - can't I?!!

superb views at last of the diver, it was close to the bank to the right of the main car park, not far along the footpath that goes alongside the pub, thanks to the birder who let us know were the bird was, it was in the one part of the lake we couldnt see from our viewing point nr the car park.

Well good luck - the weather here in Leigh is atrocious - but I guess the bird may well be around - who wants to 'travel' in this weather if you don't have to!!!

Re: Brians post: We turned up at around 10am yesterday (Sunday 21st) and spent 5 hours looking for GND ...... it appeared finally (didn't see it fly in but weather was awful) across to the right of the visitor centre building on the far bank - it fished thro the yachts and appeared to be heading on its usual circuit round past the car park and pontoon. Somehow it got past without being seen - must have dived - and reappeared near the water tower - from there it fished continuously close to the banking in among the yachts - some of which were being blown onto the stone banking the wind and rain was lashing down - the bird fished unperturbed and we got some good photos!
I'm pleased to hear its flying off at times (I would love to know where its going!) as it worried me to think of it not being fit enough to get about or return to the sea eventually.

sorry for late posting, my internet connection has been down all weekend, found the great northern diver on sunday morning at about 840am, it was in the nearside left hand corner as viewed from the car park, drove around for a closure look, as we stopped the car it took flight, it circled the res a couple of times, gained hieght and then flew off in the direction of watergrove. we went to watergrove but no sign there so has probably gone.

GND present midmorning till dinner - up and down the front - led us a merry dance but I got pics this time! It goes with the speed of an express train!! Just after dinnertime it went into the middle to preen and wash but the gulls would not leave it in peace and finally after many mins on the surface it dived and disappeared ..........

GND was there in the afternoon but extremely elusive, tho others said it had been in close in the far right bay, we saw it go past the car park and disappear, to reappear much later in front of a chappie on the far left near the pub ........ The Barnacle Goose was with the Canadas in front of the car park. We 'dipped' with the cameras ..... cei la vi.....

GND still present at dusk - again seemingly unflustered by the nearby yacht race. Barnacle Goose at Akzo Pond yesterday with the Canadas - looks more wary of people than the diver

Went up to the Lake this morning and got some good views of the diver. Came quite close to the edge of the lake near the water tower. Also while at the hide on the other side 2 Kingfishers were seen and 2 Snipe hidden away in the rushes preening. All three firsts for me so a great morning out :D

Great Northern Diver still present late pm - can be surprisingly elusive at times. The locals seem to all know about it and it seemed that nearly every dogwalker stopped to tell me there was a 'rare bird' on the Lake - best was a pair of old wifeys who asked me if I'd seen the Great Northern Dipper - wondered if they were referring to me!
Great Northern Diver still present this morning - 9am till I left at 11am. First found South of the visitors' centre, it then journeyed half way round the Lake, keeping close to the shore, until it reached the part where a woodern fence goes into the Lake, just past the cafe. It then turned back but started to get get mobbed by gulls and then went further into the centre.

Great Northern Diver and 4 Whooper Swans still present at 16:45 hrs in the fading light and pouring rain. The Diver was out from the Sea Cadets building in the SW corner of the lake, viewed from car park on the north shore next to the sailing club. It was very active - washing itself, preening and wing flapping. Well done Simon on a fantastic find, the first Great Nothern Diver in Rochdale since 1983 I believe, and that was at the Lake as well!

Great Northern still present at dusk and the 4 Whoopers
A rare day without boats here - makes you realise what this place could be like without the constant disturbance. I also saw the last Great northern Diver here ......in December 1983 - quite a wait!
Merlin today was actually at Watergrove - popped up there briefly to see if I was missing anything and when I came back the 4 Whoopers had turned up!
Only one Great Northern Diver showing well just out from the main car park today at 1pm.
