Sorry, Gervase - never implied any skepticism on your part, please don't worry! Same for Ian, sorry if that seemed so - totally not the case, would be the last thing I'd do - it seems a more-than-friendly forum here - having witnessed so many fights/arguments/heated debates during my bottle-hunting days on their forum, I can say that it just gets in the way of the real passions.

I was not questioning the ID at all. Sorry to have inadvertently caused offence.
Have only seen BNGs at Woolsten Eyes and Moore myself but they are unmistakable.
I was just wondering whether they were likely to nest there. That seems to have been cleared up. Big fat no!

Guys, am I missing something here ? Has Gervase queried your identification John? If he has I don't see it myself but I'd rather things were kept on a more genial note please.
Anyway, no, Black-necked Grebes wouldn't nest at Sale WP, they're really rather particular in their needs for breeding sites but a Black-headed Gull colony isn't always a necessity

Gervase - I am a relative newcomer to the hobby, but I am a thousand per cent sure that these were BNG - it would be almost stupid to misID them. Very dark grebes, and could only see one from the front when it turned round but it had a slight whitish hue on its chest area. The yellow tufts on the side glinted distinctly in the (ample) sunshine. Hope this helps. Is it possible that they were the Pennington Flash pair given that none were spotted at Pennington on Saturday (none reported), but then on Sunday a pair were spotted, and did the Sale pair come to the WP briefly from Pennington, returning on Sunday, or is this too short a stopover and the case is otherwise? Put it this way, given the fact that they were on the main lake when all the noise was around from the jetskis, I wouldn't have remained either.
Henry, thanks for the information, and I take it on board.
-- Edited by John Doherty on Monday 11th of April 2011 01:58:49 PM
I don't think they will. The species almost always breed in the company of Black-headed Gull colonies for protection. As a schedule 1 breeding species though if anyone finds breeding BNG's the news shouldn't be broadcast on public forums such as this one. It would be worth contacting the county recorder in such cases I think.

I saw drefinitely a pair of Black-necked grebes there today (on the main lake near to Broad Ees Dole, initially near the edge but then drifiting out towards the middle) Two Little Grebes and five herons on the Dole itself, plus assorted coots, Canada etc etc, and a Robin on the walk there. It's a squeemish experience when the mercury hits the twenties because there's a LOT of chavs out there, so be careful if you have a look over.

Agreed ivan, that side of sale water park isn't the prettiest place on earth. Belated report from yesterday, the grebe was around at 1600 showing well about 400m from deckers restaurant. Not quite as obliging as it was, but still good views. I was interested in what it was eating. I definitely saw caddifly as well, but when it was out on the jetty, it definitely had some little red worms, prehaps the ones fishermen use to bring fish in ?

BNG feeding well on caddis larvae this afternoon, It dived down for them, shook them on the surface to remove the outer case, and then ate the grub inside. Excellent views on the M60 side. Some unsavoury looking characters walking round eyeing up my camera equipment, Wont be going back on my own anyway. Also willow tit on the feeders.

I managed to see the Black-necked Grebe this evening at incredibly short range, it is certainly a very confident individual. I would not have found it so easily had I not found Steve Burke first, taking photographs: lovely to meet you Steve. Having been at the same site yesterday, I can't believe that it has managed to tolerate the level of disruption caused by jet skiers. I didn't even bother to look over the lake, it seemed so disturbed: a lesson that cost my cycling legs another 16 miles this evening!
I can add a pair of Goosander to Steve's account of the birds on Broad Ees Dole.

Black-Necked Grebe still present in location described by Joe, just before the Broad Ees Dole hide (as you come from the visitor's centre end). Very close to the water's edge, allowing cracking views. What a remarkable bird, with its flaming red orb of an eye and dandyish yellow plume!
Just after I arrived, a flotilla of Mallard arrived in the vicinity, mostly drakes. The grebe swam towards them and the Mallard left it alone - they were more interested in chasing each other around.
A lifer for me, many thanks to Tim Wilcox.
In the hide:
5 Gadwall
2 Little Grebe
1 Grey Heron
Lots of Canada Geese
3 Lapwing
2 Sand Martin

3 Jays
At least one, possibly 2 Willow Tits

Pair Goosander

Usual suspects, Canada Geese, Moorhen, Coot, Mallard, but highlights were:
SWP Marina:
2 GC Grebe ( Mating weed dance at 1150hrs near to jetski ramp was excellent)
1 Kingfisher
Chiff Chaff (Sadly many heard but not seen)
Broad Ees Dole:
2 Lapwing
2 Reed Bunting
2 L Grebe
4 Shoveler
6 Grey Heron
1 Kingfisher
River from Bamford Bridge to Jacksons Boat:
1 Sparrowhawk (Possibly 2 however 2nd raptor was too distant)
1 L Grebe
1Buzzard. ( Watched for ages on a Hawthorn tree on Chorlton Ees, however it was disturbed by some bloke walking past, but disappointment turned to glee, as the Buzzard tried to land in a nearby tree, it disturbed a female Kestrel which mobbed and chased it off, before it returned back to a point about 20 meters away from my position. Better than any naff soap.
Andy.
