I was round CWP slightly earlier today, also saw 3 Goldeneye, 3 Great Crested Grebes and two pairs of Goosander.
The drake Scaup was very easy as it was hanging round with the Pochard at the far end of the lake whereas the very few Tufted Duck were lurking around the island opposite the feeding platform.

Oscar, what wrong with the good old fashion notebook
The Greater Scaup was added to differentiate from the slightly smaller Lesser Scaup.
Scaup itself is a shortening of Scaup duck which derived from the medieval Scottish word scalp - which was a name for a mussel bed.
Have seen it spelt SKAWP, perhaps they are all right depends on which county you are in.
Recommend you check old post for bird names, and read BIRDS BRITANNICA Mark Cocker and Richard Mabey, oh yes stick to notebook.

Luke, all the hazel, ash, sweet chestnut and willow are coppiced on rotation depending on what the produce is utilised for. Management have agreed for somebody outside MV to coppice the ash and sweet chestnut on rotation and utilise the produce, half of which has been cut. The plantation thinning in that area was ongoing from last winters thinning on the opposite side of the tip road. For more detailed info on management practices please contact Richard Salisbury, Nature Reserve Officer, on 0161 881 5639.
Joey, the nest box was made to Goosander specifications and erected almost 10 years ago, although they have never taken to it.
Glad you got the Scaup Melanie, I assume that was you I spoke to.

That's right Phil Gadwall are unusual here, with only 2 records in 2009 and 5 in 2008.
The Scaup could've been the Woolston Eye drake from 24th Jan as historically aythyas were known to move between these sights and also Rostherne Mere (from Ferruginous Duck sightings).

Hello all, new member here, reawakening a childhood love for birds.
A friend and I went to the Water Park today at about 11:30am. At Broad Oak Hide, we saw a male Gadwall. As nobody had mentioned seeing one at Chorlton WP of late on here, I thought I would mention it.
Other than that, we were happy to see a Great Crested Grebe and a male Goldeneye on the Water Park and a female Goosander at Broad Oak.
Still hoping to catch up with Mr Scaup!
All the best,
Ollie

I dropped in this evening on my way home from work. The main body of the pond is still frozen, though there were quite large areas of open water at either end, especially around the island. These were densely populated with Pochard and Tufties. I counted 11 Goldeneye (6 drakes), and also noted singles of Mute Swan, Goosander (a redhead) and Great Crested Grebe.
Thanks for tips. Saw him late in fading light of sundown. Pretty boy. Seems to be putting it about a bit. he was hanging with a couple of lady pochards.

Took your advice Ian, and went to Chorlton. Drake Scaup was still p&c at 1500, close into the bank nearest the car park, across the lake from the "Garden-for-all" area. Seen diving, preening and keeping company with a Tuftie lady friend. Very good views - wish I'd taken my camera. Also noted three pairs of Goosanders.
