One of the residents informed me that the young White Blackbird was killed by a Magpie yesterday. Hardly a suprise.

Brief view of 2 fledgling Blackbirds ........ 1 seemed to be pure white and the other had white primaries.
They went for cover when 2 Magpies put in an appearance.
Probably struggle to survive but heres hoping.

all in a weeks work,kingfishers a plenty on river near power station,dipper (with a red leg ring) on and up and down river with the kingfishers, heron on the river near the power station and a female gs woodpecker and male green woodpecker in the trees by the side of the canal just off grove road. Then the usual on the bridal path from grove road to s/b, blue tits, great tits, longtailed tits, coal tits, m & f bullfinch, pair of song thrush, goldcrest a few goldfinch, treecreeper, pair of jays a few chiffchaff lots of robins and to top it all a couple of wrens. after all this still no owls.

4 Goosander seen from near Plantation Farm. (1 drake)
A word of warning for anybody walking along the canal. The towpath is closed just down from Plantation Farm toward Portland Basin owing to ongoing sewerage works. This is likely to last until about June.

Dipper seen on River Tame from Alma Bridge near Asda in Ashton mid afternoon today.
I decided I would try and walk along the canal, but when I reached Portland Basin I couldn't get over the bridge, owing to the icy conditions. There were 40 Canada Geese on the ice in the basin and 6 Mallard. A Grey Wagtail also flew over towards the river.

Watched a number of thrushes (30+, guessing redwings) platform of Stalybridge station at 7.30 this morning. Fairly high and flying in the direction of Dukinfield/Hyde.

plenty of large dragon flies and butterflies about too

6 Blackcap singing 2 Chiffchaff 4 Willow Warblers 2 Whitethroat having a territorial battle Pair of Swallows hawking over the canal near Plantation Farm 4 Swift 16 Sand Martin Female Mallard with 4 ducklings 7 pairs of Canada Geese and 1 pair of Embden Geese on canal with a creche of 46 goslings of varying sizes I wonder why they moved to the other side of the canal as I approached Dunnock feeding two young Great Spotted Woodpecker Flock of 30 Woodpigeon with one young bird present

It's the first one I've seen at this end of the valley for donkeys years.
Habitat not right. Very industrial with few big trees.

A White Blackbird (90% white) singing on television aerial and generally giving any other male Blackbirds plenty of hassle.
Very flashy.
I found out about this bird in casual conversation with one of the local residents..... he reckons that it is the birds third summer in the gardens.

First patch Chiffchaff today singing behind Whitelands Garden Centre this morning. Then another non-singing bird in Ashton town centre.
Blackcap singing at a different spot than previous sightings, not sure how many birds there are yet, will wait until they get settled.
