No need to call the RSPCA Malcolm. You problaby saw the Amazon Parrot that has frequented the area but either way, check the photo galleries on the Manchester Birding website for photos of this bird. It may give you some idea.

The bird I just saw today in Fletcher Moss was definitely not a ring necked parakeet - think a little bigger but main difference was tail was fan shaped and short. Anyone got any ideas? Got a picture on my phone but only a silouette which i will try and blow up once downloaded

Hi Roger,
That is my avatar and it is an Orange Winged Amazon .
Both the Amazon and the Rosella came for a brief food stop at 6pm today.
When you get a really good look at the Amazon you will notice dark blue in the tail too (but only when its tail is spread).
I'll take my camera next weekend and try to get some pictures (the Amazon's upside down feeding routine is quite fun to see).
Debs
Having just looked at a photo of it which was taken last year, I've realised that there is blue in the wing too but these feathers are not often visible when it is perched with folded wings.

Re my siting of the Amazonion posted this week, I made the following field notes in addition to the yellow cheeks: Inside of tail a lighter yellowy green. Very strong hooked beak Two small orangy red spots in perched position one seen near base of tail coverts and one showing on edge of primaries. Also fairy loosely feathered.
Hope this helps.

Hello Debs,
A lot of tropical Parrots & Parakeets are tougher than you think, spend all day in the sunshine but fly high into the mountains to roost..... can be freezing.
Is that the parrot in question on your avatar ?
There are at least 30 species of Amazon parrot. Thought this was a Blue-fronted but blew this pic up....... seems a lot of yellow.
Has it any other markings eg red-shoulders ?
Roger.
