A single fieldfare this morning, picking berries off a lone fenced-off tree in the Birley Fields construction site in Hulme - viewed close-up from the pedestrian bridge that splits the site. Shows that even the small mercies of saving the odd tree are worthwhile.

Ive been watching a pair of Peregrines for the last month or so on and off and check on them whenever I drive past their locality, this morning just before eight I was driving nearby so decided to make a slight detour, A quick look on the usual ledges proved fruitless, no signs. Just about to wind my window up when I see a bird coming towards me, just as I realise its a pigeon from nowhere one of the Peregrines levels out of a stoop about ten metres behind it and swings upwards and into the pigeon as if the pigeon wasnt moving. It takes the pigeon back to one of the ledges still flapping and I see the other Peregrine land on a ledge about 100 metres away. A few minutes later I was able to pick my jaw up off my chest and carry on my journey. absolutely awesome start to Monday morning

Dear all,
There was indeed an Ibis in Stretford today - we have a photo if you would like me to post it or email it. We saw it at around 1.30-2.00 but it had gone when we returned early evening. It was on the single storey roof of Robin Hood Beds, at the back of the mall and car park. It was also ringed, unlike the Hattersley bird.

Just to re-cap. At about 3.40 my next door neighbour ask me what this bird was, that he'd taken from his phone, that was perched on the roof of Iceland at Streford Precinct about 20 minutes ago taken from the taxi layby at Edge Lane. He said it had been there all morning and has caused a lot of interest among shoppers and that the RSPCA had been called. About 10 minutes later I checked from there and then spent some time scanning the roofs from the roof of the multi-story car park, but no sign. Bizarre indeed.
I had a comment made on my You Tube film of the Hattersley Bald Ibis in July 2012 a couple of weeks ago, by somebody from Hattersley named under a pseudonym, that it had been seen there 4 months ago.

Nothing unusual, you might think, except that I have never seen one on the road before.[I do see them flying over,as there is a roost at Heaton Park Reservoir not too far away]. Thanks Ian. I'm not unused to seeing inland oystercatchers - not just on 'my' playing field, but elsewhere - it's the regularity that has surprised me until your reply. As a separate debating point, are oystercatchers heading the same way as some of the gull species in as much as there will be whole generations that will never see the sea or 'real' water?
Ian McKerchar said

Oystercatchers don't necessarily need to be near any even fairly decent sized waters to breed Lawson. They now regularly breed on building rooftops in fairly urban settings (including recently the roof of an 80 foot mill in a busy town!) and will visit smaller area of grass (playing fields etc) to feed. Such instances are regularly published in the annual county bird report.

The continually (it's shown its' face for the last three summers, at least) incongruous sight of an oystercatcher feeding on the playing field behind Rhodes (Middleton) Cemetery at 7-15 a.m. this morning. Forty miles from the coast & about 5 miles from the nearest suitable inland water (Elton Reservoir), I would love to know where it is roosting & where it feeds during the rest of the day. Can any of the Heaton Park, Middleton, or Bury regulars offer any suggestions?
Also at the same time (though not at all uncommon) there was a single swallow giving the most amazing display of aerobatics as it hawked the same playing field.

My spring walk-to-work bird tally reched a new high today of 17 species seen. Basically it takes me from Lilford area to Leigh town, through the estates and past the post-nuclear-holocaust landscape of the new busway to my place of work near the Police Station. Nothing out of the ordinary seen today but it's surprising how the total mounts up:
House Sparrow Woodpigeon Blackbird Starling Dunnock Blue Tit Great Tit Robin Magpie Carrion Crow Lesser Black Backed Gull Black Headed Gull Goldfinch Wren Feral Pigeon Mallard Collared Dove
Even the debris and woodchip of the busway area is still quite "birdy" with wren, robin, blackbird and dunnock all ferreting around in the remains of the landscape.
