Saw a Barn Owl yesterday at a site in Gtr. Manchester - for obvious reasons can't say where. This and Sandwich Tern being the biggest GM blockers for me.
This brings my total to 200 in Gtr Manchester (201 really but I just can't count "Streetpeckers" (If I did then Two-barred Crossbill would have brought up the 200). Living on the edge of Greater Manchester meant that I didn't keep a GM list but had a 10 mile list instead - otherwise I would have many more. It was only when I checked up 2 or 3 years ago that I realised I was on over 190 that I started pursuing a list. Having to contend with bus, train and on foot meant that I've missed quite a few including the Heaton Park Red-rumped Swallows which I missed by 40 minutes.

Well done to Mr. Wilson on finally hitting the 200 mark in style, thanks to Simon's excellent double find at Heaton Park!
I wasn't in a position to make a move myself due to commitments in the NE, and even if I had set off, the birds would have been long gone before my arrival; - one of those situations where one takes life on the chin and quickly moves on.....
Best Wishes, Mike P.

Recently celebrated reaching the magical (?) 200 at a site recently (getting lots of congratulations from fellow birders). Unfortunately, something had gone amiss in my Excel spreadsheet where I keep my records, and for some reason Common Sandpiper appears twice!
Therefore, I'm still one short. :(
But, looking on the bright side, it shouldn't be too long (hopefully) before I can celebrate all over again :)

I am concerned that the age range of these meeting is high, please if you have kids of your own or Grand kids get them into Birds flowers trees whatever, Birders and the like are now on the Red List .

If anyone wants to put a face to a name Steve Atkins he presenting a talk at the Cheshire Wildlife trust on 26th November in St Marys Church Sale, can you imagine if the whole club turned up.

I'm on 130 and a target like 200 is a great motivator to bird in GM rather than always go to the low-hanging fruit nearer the coast or at RSPB places. The thread is brilliant to read too, and is a clear reason why the forum as a whole is one of the best birding sites on the web. The surreal touches about the Xmas do etc are the icing on the cake!
DO NOT DELETE IT!

I certainly have spent more time birding in Manchester as a result of Ian's website and thank him for it, this thread has given me a great amount of enjoyment and I hope we can continue in the manner it was intended.

It's got me out in parts of GM I would never normally visit and I've discovered new sites as well as self finding some rather nice birds. Yes, it's always been a bit of fun, but I've enjoyed watching people move up to the magic number and its nice to be able to congratulate those that do make it. As was meeting Mr Passant in the field, or actually by the side of the road, So nice to finally put a face to the name. I met many other members adding to their list, and a few new members, methinks?

For Durham listing purposes we count that area between the R.Tyne and the R. Tees; - this overlaps with Cleveland which straggles the R.Tees.
South of the Tees, (i.e. S. Cleveland) I only venture for a British tick, hence the 2nd cal. year Ivory Gull at Saltburn, almost 29 years ago on 01/02/1986, which I twitched from Bramhall where I lived at the time.
It was such a great bird I went back again the following day with a relatively new friend who needed it; -a certain John Rayner!

I know ian would never agree with the following poem ,but regarding pipits, it has been said
Its a pity that the pipit have no diagnostic features specifically they are the least distinctive of gods creatures For the naming any one you need five measurements together with a drawing of the wing tip and the length of every feather Count the spots on breast and back be the sure of which sex is, make a picture of the pattern of the one but outer rectrix Pay extravagant attention to the hind claw's conformation, none 'weak and long' or curved and strong (or snapped in preservation) and when you're marshalled all the facts no matter what their sense is if the bird was caught in Europe its ten to one, Pratensis....
