Quick walk around amber Jet fields today. No sign ofcanada geese or Brent goose in field opposite broomstairs farm which worried me as the farmer told me in the past that he often shoots the canada geese or sends the dog in after them. Then a flock of 6 canada geese flew over. I followed them into the field on the opposite side of the river. After creeping up on them from behind I could see the Brent goose within 50 yards + 80 + Canada geese. Very little activity on the river. 6 Grey wagtail, kingfisher. goldfinch, pair of siskin within a few feet with the male singing away while the female fed on alder catkins.

Sunday: Heyrod and Carrbrook area of the river and canal. Kingfishers seen several times, girlfriend managed a quick look and spotted it was a female we saw at least once. One (unsure of sex) was seen heading to where they nested last year, positive signs!
Dippers busy on the river but so fast that they didnt stop to show off their legs for possible rings!
Garden wise we seem to have been hammered by goldfinches, siskins and redpolls on the sunflower heart feeders lately.

Hi Ashley
the ring on the right leg which looks white should be a standard BTO metal ring shining in this wonderful sunny weather If there's a coloured ring above the metal one, this tells you on which river the bird was ringed and there should be coloured rings on the left leg to identify the individual.
Only birds that were adult at the time of ringing got the full set of jewellry. Nestlings (pulli) were just given a metal ring as juvenile mortality is so high.
Glad there's been a resurgence of interest in the ringing scheme.

Dippers were having another tiff today but was further down towards grove road just near the weir if you know the area. One was the white ringed (on right leg) individual but other was constantly airborne so no chance to see it there. Two kingfishers passed me while I sat and had a brew at the weir. Moorhen, goldcrest, goosander (m+f), plenty of mistle thrush pairs about (at least 3 pairs), lots of nuthatch calling too.
Great day for it too! Will prob be out in same area later in week.

Roger, I toyed with the thought that it may have been an oystercatcher I heard. Also if you're on that section on Grove Road keep an eye out because the unringed dipper there has been knocking about with one with a white ring. Saw unringed one yday though and it was alone.

Apologies I forget that im crossing the border when I enter Mossley! I will make sure all future posts end up the right place. Do you know the purpose of the ringed dippers or any details about the study? I have checked every dipper I see where I live (Carrbrook/Heyrod) but none of these are ringed.
Steve Suttill said

Thanks Ashley,
Dippers do breed some years on the river just down the hill from where you heard the call. Many of the local birds have been colour-ringed as part of a scientific study, so if you get good views it's worth taking note of the ring colours.
I was a bit confused because your post was on this Duki, Ashton, Stalybridge thread. There is a separate Mossley thread but I know there's no logic to this system (we, the forum users, set up these threads, not our wonderful website owner!). There's a Saddleworth thread and also a separate Greenfield one, so it can get confusing!
Steve Suttill said
Tue Feb 5 5:40 PM, 2013
The colour ringing project intends to find out how long birds live, the size and number of territories, how far they travel, etc. The study has highlighted how susceptible they are to predation (by mink in particular) and how prevalent bigamy and infanticide are amongst Dippers.
I've got an article from an old county report I can send you - just send me a Private Message with your e-mail address
There used to be a Dipper sightings thread on this forum but Ian (quite rightly in this case) would rather threads were site-based rather than species-based.

I think theres another rajas on main road in Mossley but yes the one I mean is the one you described. The pond where I heard the dipper is between Micklehurst Road and Stayley. If you're coming down Stayley road, cross over to the right hand side just before the junction and you can see where I mean.
Theres a good walk along Stayley Brook (known locally as The Clough apparently) with some great woodland at the top if you dont mind a few chavs and their detritus.
