The male blackcap continues to enjoy the fatballs in my old Trafford garden.
Virtually everything that I might realistically expect in an average Winter today:- male brambling, 1-2 redpoll, pr bullfinch, pr nuthatch, 1-2 greenfinch, song thrushes (back & front; could be the same bird), 2 collared doves etc... A goldcrest was in trees just in front of garden area, and a grey heron was patrolling the estate early on.

The local sparrowhawk had a FEAST today. Here he is just after the bloodbath. Scoffed a female sparrow by the looks of it, but it wasn't easy to tell from the mutilation that was left behind afterwards.
The garden is very close to Elton rez and the bird also frequents there too:)
Put an hour or so into checking garden feeders due to the foggy weather round here. Goldfinch in abundance with over 30 on several occasions feedin/queuing to feed on the sunflower hearts. Also a couple of visits from a Redpoll and a single Greenfinch on the same feeders. A couple of small flocks of Long Tailed Tits put in an appearance either on the hearts or the fat blocks. Again up to 20 Blackbirds feeding on the food put on the lawn ,joined by several Woodpigeons, White Doves and a couple of Collared Doves. Also the usual Blue and Great Tits ,House Sparrows etc.

Chaffinch male (i will try and get an update on his bad foot when I get chance, but he seems to be surviving well still.
Greenfinch Goldfinch Bullfinch female Lesser redpolls x7 confirmed as all seen together. Two have originally been really nervous and struggling to land on the feeders, which indicates that they have never seen a bird feeder before. A week on, one now has managed to sit with the others whilst the other is copying the technique the Chaffinch uses by hovering over the perch, grab a sunflower seed from the hole and then eat it in the tree.

Great joy to see two lapwings fly over , in semi - darkness .

As I'm working from home again, I managed a quick look in the garden between jobs.
I had to go out at dinner time as the Starlings and Jackdaws have scoffed the fatballs between them.
I also put additional food out, which one of the Coal Tits was down to before I had chance to move and also a male Blackbird was there quite quickly.
Larger birds on the ground included
Two Jay Magpie Two Collared Dove Two Jackdaw Three Woodpigeon An aggressive female Blackbird seems intent on chasing two males away.
Amongst the smaller birds
Nuthatch and a large mixed flock of House Sparrow and Greenfinch, numbering over 20 in total. They were flushed before I had a chance to count them and didn't return before I had to go back to work. It's a shame that I can't work in the kitchen, although maybe that's not really a good idea as I'd never get any work done!

Where , why , do they go when they know there is reliable food here ? Meanwhile , chaffies , goldfinch , great , blue and coal tits are ever-present , with long tailed making frequent visits . A flock of fieldfares has been feeding , for a week ,on the large crop of cooking apples under the trees ; they have not touched the crab apples . Been quieter lately in my Radcliffe garden, and what I do have are more flighty than they used to be. This has only been the case since gradual loss of trees in the locality over the years (which is a shame) but come spring, hopefully things will stabilise once the greenery regrows for cover.
But 6x (or 7x) Lesser redpolls still visit A few goldfinch Chaffinch Mistle thrush this morning And I've has upto 7 or 8 blackbirds interested in my garden when the snow first fell.

Also in the garden in a 20 mins watch were up to 12 Goldfinch at any one time feeding on the sunflower hearts. They also brought in with them a couple of Redpoll and Greenfinch. Also present were a few Chaffinch, Blue,Great and Coal Tits,House Sparrows, a few Woodpigeons, a single Collared Dove, and plenty of Blackbirds still feeding on the dry dog food( when the Pheasants and white Doves allow them to!!!)
My redpolls were back again in my Radcliffe garden. Apparently, looks like there was three this time.

I had a flock of about x8+ Long tailed tits, and although I've seen them before on seed feeders, but never actually seen them take anything. At least three of these tits landed in quick sucession on my sunflower hearts and each in turn took a single seed as would a blue, great or coal tit would. One or two came back for seconds.
The dunnocks have taken up residence in the shrubbery, and I'm hoping they will breed there in spring.

Apart from the regular visitors, I heard a Bullfinch calling from the back of the garden and a Grey Wagtail was around but didn't visit the garden.

14 Greenfinch in a tree overlooking the garden on Sunday 13 December
Tawny Owl calling from the back of the garden on Monday 14 December
I filled the feeders up today, just before the rain arrived.
Highlights in the garden included
A Dunnock was singing from the back of the garden
Nuthatch
2 Magpie
2 Jackdaw - usually on the fatballs but they were feeding on the ground today and the first time I've seen two in the garden at the same time
A Mistle Thrush flew over while I was filling the feeders
Otherwise an aggressive Robin chased all the smaller birds away
I had a flock of about x8+ Long tailed tits, and although I've seen them before on seed feeders, but never actually seen them take anything. At least three of these tits landed in quick sucession on my sunflower hearts and each in turn took a single seed as would a blue, great or coal tit would. One or two came back for seconds.
Other noteworthy things include:
Bullfinch x1f
Chaffinch x1m, 1f
Goldcrest x1
Wren x2
The dunnocks have taken up residence in the shrubbery, and I'm hoping they will breed there in spring.
Ta!
Rough and rubbish weather equals back window spotting! Highlights include:
1 x female blackcap
1 x coal tit
2 x long-tailed tit
14 x goldfinch
1 x male chaffinch
