We four were here Fri AM. Nothing new, but loads of Gooseander,Shovelers a few Goldeneye and all the other stuff. Nice at the feeder hide, loads of everything, at least 6 Bullfinch.
Good day.
We were looking at the lake on the raod under the canal, when some of the "red-nose" girls were passing. They said they had never looked though a scope or bins, so we step up shop, and they really enjoyed it. Hope it sparks an interest for the future, but the culture gap was light years apart.

Ste Dugdale and I were in Teal Hide around 5.00pm today when we noticed a heron had caught something to the right of the small reedbed opposit the hide. When I scoped it I discovered it was a little grebe. It killed the bird then swiftly lost interest, stalking off and leaving the corpse in the weed-strewn water. A couple of minutes later Ste said 'it's picked it up again', but when I scoped the heron once more it had actually caught a fair-sized jack pike, around 14-16" long, which it then proceeded to swallow.
A remarkable few minutes!

Given that breeding activity will begin soon that will be another thing to throw at them. As for off-road motorbikes where they shouldn't be, never get tired of phoning GMP on 0161 872 5050, so that they can be kept in the loop, as it just isn't feasible to stop them getting in to large sites.

Got to say I have a lot sympathy for the thankless job of the ranger... Same problems occur at most nature reserves and open spaces in the county I suspect, I know they certainly do in Stockport. There are major problems with motorcycles and worst still last year people were being shot at with air rifles at Reddish Vale. Drunken yobs in the summer evenings at Etherow park and 'doggers' at Chadkirk.
Sad truth is it's just the society we live in... If the police and law courts can't/won't do anything with these lowlife, then the rangers and us other decent human beings have little chance.

Have seen a few posts on the forum lately, including the last one from John indictating that the emoticons appear not to be working.
Looks like a big enough problem for the Caped Crusader to try and solve! Batman and the Boy Wonder are of the opinion that to get them to work you have to go into the "More Emoticons" box at the bottom and copy and paste the writing of the emoticon you want to use. There is much more choice of emoticon in this option as well and gives all a better chance to show their creative and emotional side!
Anyway must get back to real crime-fighting and sorting out the fiendish Catwoman and the Riddler. .......to the Batcave!
I personally can't get the preview box to work - look like a higher power than Batman - aka as Ian Mck - is required to sort out that one!
Bill.

No apology necessary Peter, it was a good while ago and there's nothing wrong with discussing previous posts etc. The bird was caught and it's ring didn't conform to any known ringing program (it was caught by hand incidentaly!) so there is little doubt it's an escape or perhaps been 'dumped' there as seems to happen occasionally.

the identity of the ever present small dark Canada Goose has been discussed before on this thread when I first brought it up and their identification has moved on little since then and is still open to a certain amount of conjecture, on my behalf atleast, but at the time I felt it was closest to Taverners though I haven't cared to look at it since!
