Had a productive walk along the cycle trail from Broadheath to the Rope and Anchor in the sunshine this morning. Black Moss Covert held a large group of mixed finches, and would be worth a good look with a scope. The chaffinches had 2+ bramblings with them, and another flock consisted of linnets, goldfinches, siskin and 2 probable lesser redpoll. Field 122 had a pair of grey partridge by the hedge, and there were also a few redwing, a pair of mistle thrushes and 16 lapwings. 2 skylarks were singing in this area. The tall hedges just before the Rope and Anchor end car park held 3 yellowhammers.
5.30pm Whilst cycling home tonight I stopped off and spent 15mins tonight at ETW looking for the Barn Owl I saw there last week but no luck. However, as I reached the NE corner of the back of MUFC training ground as it joined the track to Swiss Cottage Farm a Tawny Owl was sat on a telegraph post before flying off into the woods.
Pink-footed Geese 3 (actually down on the field, departed NW at 11:45) and 230 flew NW at 11.30am Fieldfare 115 Redwing 110 Carrion Crow 27 Buzzard 4 Chaffinch 6 Bullfinch 3

Although there are several small roosts in the area (usually no more than 100 birds in leylandii trees) most Starlings in the area head to Rostherne Mere where upto 50,000 birds have been gathering recently. Henry.

Driving along Dunham Road at 4pm this evening I noticed a large Starling build up on the pylon and wires in f158. Estimate of 300-400 birds and other flocks joining them. As I reached Cadishead on the other side of the MS Canal a single flock of c.300 birds flew over SW in the direction of the gathering on the pylon in f158. Presumably they were on their way to joining this pre-roost gathering. Don't know if this is a regular build up here as I don't normally go past here at this time of day. I wonder where they go to roost?

Wednesday, 9th November, pm walk from Isherwood Road.
Had a little walkabout in the general area of the training ground this morning in very dense fog, from 0830 to 1050. Winter birds really starting to build up, but still no partridge! Birds of note were:
c.30 Yellowhammer c.30 Reed Bunting c.100 Fieldfare/Redwing (more Fieldfare than redwing) 2 Wren 1 Grey Heron 4 Robin 5 Chaffinch
A bit quiet, but great to see all the buntings and thrushes feeding together on the path. I tried to put some feed down so they came closer, but no joy. Still a nice morning's birding.

Driving from Altrincham to Partington on Sinderland Road this evening I came across a rather unusual looking and acting bird of prey. It was feeding on the ground in the last field before entering Partington at the back of the Leisure Centre. Initially I thought it was a Buzzard but I stopped my car because it just didn't look like a normal Buzzard or act like a normal Buzzard when feeding on the ground. It was the size of a Buzzard but completely dark brown all over - much darker than a normal Buzzard with no visible White barring underneath. I know Buzzards are very variable in colour but it reminded me of a Harris Hawk colour. Secondly it's behaviour was rather strange. It was running around almost chicken-like, chasing other birds in the field (magpies and pigeons) - not Buzzard like behaviour! Trouble was I didn't have my binoculars and couldn't stop for long on the road due to other cars. Could it have been a Harris Hawk or just a wierd Buzzard? Any suggestions?
