24 Waxwings coming to a berry bush next to Goodbodies sandwich shop on the corner of Grimshaw Lane and Pine Street, Middleton at 15.45. The birds landed several times but were flushed each time by passing traffic and relocated to alders & poplars on the playing fields behind, near the Gabriels Terrace access.

(new member - hi all)
I've just had a visit from a massive flock of Waxwings, to the cotoneaster in my garden in Northenden. I got so excited I googled 'Waxwings South Manchester' and found this thread :) They flew off towards the direction of the Post House (as was) Hotel about ten minutes ago now, but wow they were fabulous. It's been some years since I did more than coo over garden birds, so I was quite chuffed that recognizing them came immediately. Feeling the birding urge now :D
I reckon on there being around 40 - 50 of them. They left without stripping the tree bare, so they might come back (I hope)
Regards Tracy M

That just slightly beats my count of 7 there last Saturday morning John, and I'll bet they'll be long gone by the weekend which is the next time I can get there during daylight.
John Rayner wrote:
Sorry Mike, I've only just picked up on this.
There were a fair number of berries on a single garden Cotoneaster that the Waxwings were swooping down onto (just off Doric Avenue) but given the numbers of birds involved they probably won't last long.
I took a crude photo of the flock in a tree and have done my best at counting from this. I get a count of 279 which ties in well with the estimate taken by eye.
Hope they stick around,
Cheers, John

it may be that the birds roost in the tall tree above the bush?

Earlier today, I picked up a flock of c40 from the car window as we left Sainsbury's on the A6 in Hazel Grove. On returning to investigate at 14:45, I located a larger flock of c100 in a tall tree by the bowling green at the rear of the Crown Hotel, overlooking the back of Out Patients' Department (OPD), Steeping Hill. On closer inspection, one of the gardens to the rear of OPD has one of those trees bearing berries that look as though they should taste of raspberry ripple ice cream. Twenty minutes later, the flock had dispersed, but c70 of them had set up camp in nearby Great Moor Park, by the children's playground.
I hope they stick around.

c130 waxwings in a tree behind Pyramid car sales, corner of Hall St and Banks Lane, Offerton at 14.50. I heard them whilst making a delivery on Banks Lane and had a walk up to see how many there were. No binoculars of course. Having had a quick on google maps the tree was in back garden of house on Hampson St/Knowlsley Rd. Couldnt see any berry trees nearby where I stood, but again using google there seem to be a couple on Knowsley Rd. Google pic was taken in summer though.
