Saturday 9th Nov. 08.30 - 11.15 hrs.
Went down here not expecting much but decided to practise what I preach.
Peak Forest Canal from Portland Basin to Shepley Brew. All sightings from canal tow-path.
Dipper on River Tame under railway arches. Big flock of Woodpigeon (400+) heading SE. Buzzard. Redwing. Small flock (5) feeding on Rowan facing the entrance to the marina. Another much larger flock up past Plantation Farm feeding on Hawthorn .... couldn't get accurate count due to angle of vision. Bullfinch (4m 1f ) Greenfinch 3 Goldfinch. Small flocks over in dribs and drabs. Pied Wagtail. Nuthatch heard but not seen. Plenty of Tit activity. A solitary Common Gull in Plantation Farm field.
Kingfisher. Had at least 5 fly-bys plus a few minutes perch-up. It was on the canal between the swing-bridge and the old railway bridge (walking towards Hyde), there is some mesh fencing running down to the canal from one of the properties opposite ... The bird perched on one of the metal frames for a few minutes before flying into the willows. A lady dog-walker told me she sees it (them ?) quite regular anywhere between the swing-bridge and the back of Ryders Truck Rental on Globe Lane, Dukinfield.
Had a really enjoyable 3 hours in the sunshine.

I haven't seen a Kingfisher on the river for a couple of years but don't go walkabout as often as I should..... used to see one regular off Caroline St bridge (at side of The Bridge Inn).
Obviously viewing from the the town centre bridges is all pot-luck but I have a mate who reckons your best chance is standing on the canal aquaduct at Portland Basin (A-U-Lyne) ...... this gives you great views, either side, of the river running underneath and a good chance of the electric-blue flash. He said that he has seen one knocking about lately.
As for Mr Suttills "Big Five", can't say I have Steve, only "fours" ........ mind you I once had the "Lesser Seven" of - Feral Pigeon, Jackdaw, Blackheaded Gull, Starling, Canada Goose, Mallard and Harris Hawk ...... all in one view on Tescos car-park.
