There was a probable Green Sandpiper flying over the fields just before April cottage this evening. I didn't see the bird take flight and so don't know if it was flying through, I would be tempted to think not as the bird was low over the fields if it was flying through (about 20ft) and circled 2 or 3 times looking more like it had been flushed. I'm not great with wader's on the ground let alone in flight so i'll see what others think. The light wasn't great as a large black cloud was passing over however upon seeing the bird my first thought before getting the bins on it was snipe as it at first glance it appeared a similar size, the bins proved however that the bill was much smaller. Plumage wise the bird was pale underneath yet dark on top with an unbroken white rump which I remember distinctly, there didn't appear to be any pattern discernible on the top of the wings yet the light wasn't fantastic, this was about 19:30. I can't give anymore details than that as thats all I managed to make out.
I hadn't intended to be out long but spent quite a bit of time trying to relocate the bird unsuccessfully.
Other than that there was quite a bit of activity mainly around Larkhill and the scrub area behind;
Redpoll Willow Warbler Chiffchaff Whitethroat Blackcap 16 Mistle Thrush Male and female Bullfinch

0700 - 1200
Gird Ln - Hollywood End - Smithy Ln - Far Bradshaw - Gun Farm - Robin Hood Picking Rods - Quarry area - Cloughend and back to the car.
This afternoon, I saw a very large flock wheeling around like Starlings(which they were not). Every time they landed they were just too far away, but they were up again in seconds. They spent about 10 minutes doing this, making a twittering noise. I assume they were Golden Plover, as they were about that size and colour. Any offers?

It doesn't matter that things in general are scarily quiet, when you see fledged young somehow you feel there is hope. Seeing a couple of juvenile tree sparrows up here today made me feel that way. Perhaps with a good, long breeding season things can bounce back next year?

I hope John really 'had' the hobby, but he hadn't seen it when I met him which was well over an hour after I'd seen it. Also there were 6 wheatears with four reed buntings together in the same area. Sparrowhawk brought the raptor list to four for the morning, which ain't bad. No warbler/flycatcher action though, which was bad.

Excellent. He told me he had never seen one up there, so I'm glad he did at last.
P.S. Good work today. Can't wait til I retire (envy, envy). I hope there's still some birds to see by then.
Cheers,
Andy

John,
I hope John really 'had' the hobby, but he hadn't seen it when I met him which was well over an hour after I'd seen it. Also there were 6 wheatears with four reed buntings together in the same area. Sparrowhawk brought the raptor list to four for the morning, which ain't bad. No warbler/flycatcher action though, which was bad.
Buzzard 7
Kestrel 2
Green Woodpecker 1
Wheatear 1
Swallow c35 south
[John Ireland had a further 4 Wheatears and a Hobby today and (on 23rd) 3 Spotted Flycatchers - all near Clough End Farm]
Cheers, John
