I live in Middleton and during the last two weeks I have had four separate sightings flying over my house (always in the evening). The latest two days ago was a flock of 7.

We have a small flock of up to 8 ring-necked parakeets visiting our feeders several times a day. They are some or maybe all of a breakaway group which seem to have taken up residence on Heaton Mersey Common.

One was at Skitters Wood, Ashton-in-Makerfield this morning. I had heard a Parakeet flying over one morning last week without seeing it to confirm the species. Don't know what the origins of this bird are likely to be. There was a small population nearby in the vicinity of Haydock Park Racecourse 15-20 years ago I was told by a resident there.

Hi Tony, sounds like you've got the right place. You can access it from that corner of a Priestnall and Mersey Rd and if you walk straight down it brings you to Burnage Lane. The common is really the grassy bit on the left hand side as you walk down.
Walked my dog their last night but didn't see any parakeets, although pretty sure I could hear one. Be interested to know the best way to see them.

I was watching the birds on my feeders this morning and a couple of ring necked parakeets came in and started feasting on the peanuts. There were also three pigeons pecking away on the ground picking up the scraps and numerous tits nipping in and out.
Suddenly the one of the parakeets screeched and all the birds took flight and a sparrowhawk zoomed past the feeders just missing one of the parakeets.
Later four parakeets turned up and just sat in a tree for a while, occasionaly hopping from branch to branch. They looked quite wary and then all four shot off screeching again. I guess the sparrowhawk is still around.
Has anyone else seen a sparrowhawk trying to take a parakeet?

Tony Darby and myself counted the biggest ever departure from the Platt Fields pre-roost up to 4.25pm. A new maxima of 40 left in groups of 13, 20 and 7. Last winter's maxima was consistently 34 plus the Amazon (not with them lately). This possibly indicates 6 successfully reared young within the south Manchester population this year.
