I was woken this morning at 4.30am by a loud clucking and sqwuaking. Jumping out of bed and looking blearly (no glasses) at the night sky hoping for an unusual house tick I realised the noise was coming from the street. There, running up and down in the middle of my Moss Side road pursued by local cats, was a chicken! If I see it again I'll call the RSPCA but I fear it may also have attracted the attentions of an urban fox.

Finally spotted rooftop Oystercatchers at Tonge Moor, only heard them before in the industrial area. As I have suspected for three years they are in the area of the old Walmsleys Paper Machinery Works off Crompton Way (not sure what it is called now), which has a security guard on the entrance gate. No chance of anyone disturbing them here.
I was able to watch them through a metal fence by the footpath from the side of the police station. They were on a sloping corrugated iron roof.
I am off to France again for 3 weeks on Saturday (still waiting for Little Bittern on my local list there) so I will not be able to check on them for another 4 weeks. Two years ago they took the young to Castle Hill School playing fields and I am sure Ian would appreciate anyone coming up with a breeding record if they are in that area whilst I am away. Obviously it is better to chat to the kids parents before using binoculars at the school, as I did when a couple of mothers enquired what they were, as they had been visiting for a few days (the Oystercatchers not the mums).
Cheers, David.
