To put it into contex Den,I've made 5000+ birding visits to penny in the last 35 years, and in that time only seen a bittern about 8 times, all in the middle of winter, normally when the flash is a foot thick with ice,and normally flying into the reeds at rammies, and only once when i knew one was showing about 25 years ago at plank lane end. The chances of getting a shot of one at penny in summer ,not in flight I think would come in line with a lottery win,and i cannot ever remember seeing a picture of a bittern from penny, and charlie owen been trying since 1960so good luck and prove me wrong! There are just too many hiding places you never see at penny from any hideSi thi tomorrow

I received an email last night asking for an opinion on a 'mystery bird'. It was taken from the Tom Edmondson hide at 08:30 on the 9th of July and was apparently being mobbed by Black-headed Gulls. The photos, although barely record shots, clearly portray a Bittern, flying off towards Pengies direction!
So, there is undoubtably a Bittern knocking about Pennington somewhere. Be on the lookout!
Thanks to John Cartwright for sending me the images.
