River Tame, either side of the bridge at Portland Place, Stalybridge
1 Kingfisher. Extended views on both sides of the bridge, on the Cheshire side of the river. It first flew from the area of the old police station, perched briefly, then flew upstream, under the bridge and out of view. I then walked upstream from the bridge to just past the footbridge behind Knowle Street, then back again to the main road. I spotted the bird again flying just yards upstream from the bridge at Portland Place, perching on the buddlea and old Knotweed stalks, from where it was fishing. It caught and devoured a small fish, again returning to the same perch. I watched it for a further 10 minutes before I had to leave. A fantastic sight. Another one of Steve Suttill's "big five" - I had a goosander here last week - I'm doing them in stages, rather than on the same day!!
