Early morning quick walk around yesterday 17th October, 8.15-8.45. Nothing much to report. 5 Pied Wagtails on wall around res, 4 Crows in valley behind, circa 50 Lapwing roosting on muddy headland on main road side (2 gulls amongst them - couldnt make them out only had bino's and no scope), 2 Mallard, geese heard in flight but never seen (perhaps they dropped in valley). There was also somesort of diver on Deeply Vale which looked very light in colour but again I couldnt make it out with my bino's (8x40's are good but not that good!).
Sparrowhawk (F) hunting along road by res and then flicked over wall into finch flock Kestrel Wheatear F + imm (large, upright, bright) + F Bhd Gull c. 120 LBbGull c. 80 C Gull 3 (ad) + 2 imm Mallard 2 (ad) + juv Goldfinch 10 (E of res) + 30 (on S embankment / fields)

Linnet 4 (with Goldfinches) Lapwing 15 P wagtail 8 (family)
for the record the sand martins almost certainly come from a colony of around 20 - 30 prs in Fletcher Bank Quarry (SD803168). The boundary between Rossendale and Greater Manchester runs through the quarry and the colony is in the Rossendale half

Just got back from the res, what an amazing day! I have never seen anything like it, every other brick on the edge of the res was a Wheatear! Easily 150+ birds, they were just everywhere. On the longest side alone at one time there were 80, but there were more feeding on the slopes out of sight, more in the fields around and more on the other walls. Will be sending Ian some pics.
