Was leaving Castleshaw driving down the lane towards the main road about 12:10 today. Had an excellent sighting of a female Cuckoo both in flight then resting briefly on a fence post before taking flight again towards Delph. A first for me at Castleshaw and not seen a Cuckoo for many years.
Other sightings today:
6 Tufted Duck Usual large flock of Canada Geese. Adult Great Crested Grebe with single juvenile on the lower. Adult Great Crested Grebe on the upper.
One Great Crested Grebe chick has survived and is doing well. 5 adults present. 4 Oystercatcher 3 Common Sandpiper 2 Tufted Duck

Needed a break from sitting at the computer listening to the rain rattling on the window, so a quick hour at Castleshaw (3pm - 4pm):
Lower Resr: only birds on water were a pair of Gt Crested Grebes (one carrying young)
Top Resr: one Tufted drake and another pair of Gt Crested Grebes (no young this time). Two or three Oystercatchers - couldn't be sure, one kept flying noisily back and forth over Top Bank.
Apart from a few Swallows and House Martins around the farm trees everything else was keeping a low profile.
Should have stayed at home and kept warm and dry!

Castleshaw Res. 12.30- 1.15pm Tuesday 10th April I think there is a single Pink Footed Goose on the Lower res. First spotted on the water at the top end, it then went a shore to feed on grass. Bird appears very wary and does like other company especially the Canada's. Hope some other Castleshaw regulars Mark, Ian etc are about to confirm. Nothing else of any interest to report.
