Didn't really know where to post this as it is directly behind my garden, but in the field behind my house at 4pm today were:
c160 Starlings (before they flew into mature Oaks to roost) c25 Redwings (possibly more in with the Starlings) c12 Pied Wagtails 26 Jackdaws c45 Black-Headed Gulls 1 Common Gull (amongst previous) 5 Magpies c5 Goldfinch 8 Woodpigeon
The Starlings are great to watch as they roost in 2 large trees behind my house each night. I would call it a murmuration but I don't know how many birds there have to be for it to be classed as one. At its best there can be over 250 Starlings but it changes each night.

Left depot late due to snow and passed Redgate Recycling.
Currently around 200 Gulls circling over the plant, from what I can see, they appear to be Black-headed and Herring but that was just a glimpse so certainly not 100% on whether any other Gull species there, ie Common? Lesser Black-backed?
More Gulls are sat on the outer fencing to the waste yard along with plenty of Magpies

Local deliveries allowed another early pm break today at...Yes, you've guessed it, Redgate Lane!
Nowhere near the amount of birds present today. Wintery rain and strong winds battered the wagon whilst I was here and it affected the birds too. The Gulls, although seemingly being blown backwards, actually deal with the wind pretty well, it was the other birds that the wind was telling on.
Of note... Black-headed Gulls - approx 30-40 Herring Gulls - approx 20 Magpies - 15-20 (all flap and no gain for the airborne birds) Starling - approx 20 (again being made to look flimsy in the strong wind) 1 Pied Wagtail - picking up titbits off the road but all of a sudden it took to the wing and in a split second it had travelled about 500yards and had soon disappeared in the wind 1 Blackbird - fast flying over the yard but didn't stop (or couldn't stop) 1 Wren - darted across Redgate Lane into a bush, very low and aerodynamically unaffected
Another bird that wasn't bothered by the wind was a Kestrel. Did a couple of short hovers then drifted on towards Belle Vue. Couple of Black-headed Gulls weren't too happy it being there and paid it some close attention which obviously put the Kestrel off hanging around.

Another early pm break on way back to depot outside the Redgate Recycling yard.
Again lots of Gulls present on the old car hire building opposite and circling above the yard. Black-headed Gulls - approx 150-200 (yesterday's darker individual also present, it was one of the birds flying near my wagon) Herring Gulls - approx 30-40 Lesser Black-backed Gull - 1 Starling - 50-60 Pied Wagtail - 2 Magpie - around 15 Carrion Crow 3 or 4 about Few Woodpigeon around too! It went quiet a few times but they came back when a bin-wagon turned up.
Of note...travelling back to depot, I glanced over at Gorton Park directly opposite Showcase Cinema's due to a mass gathering of Gulls on the grass, so it seems when it dies down at the refuse yard they go over to the park.

This is probably the best thread to post this sighting on, and maybe of particular interest to Ian McKerchar and the other Gullers.
Tacho break mid afternoon near Redgate Recycling building in Gorton.
Within minutes there was a mass of birds predominantly Gulls, over the refuse yard, in the refuse yard, in the building itself and on the surrounding buildings. They were mainly concentrating around the refuse yard when there was activity from the workmen.
Black-headed Gulls - rough guess at well over 200 (1 in particular below) Herring Gulls - approx 25-30 maybe more (1 in particular below) Lesser Black-backed Gulls - 2 patrolling the outskirts Common Gulls - not many maybe a handful Plenty of juvenile / young of the large Gulls in the mix and due to the chaos of the rubbish feast 'fest' I will apologise now as I couldn't put a species to every one.
But 2 Gulls of note mentioned above that I can describe...firstly 1 of the Black-headed Gulls stood out in that it had a much darker grey hue to it than any I've seen, I don't think it's anything rarer though I just wondered if it's a common occurrence and it's something I've missed all this time? Secondly a large Gull appeared of Herring Gull likeness and size, and at first that's what I thought it was, but this Gull's wings appeared not to have black primary tips. I tried to keep a visual on it but there was that many Gulls I lost it, so at this stage I'm not making any call as to anything rarer as I didn't get anywhere near a good enough look. Needless to say another visit may prove valuable. The activity died down in the yard after approx 15mins and virtually all the Gulls disappeared very quickly, almost as if they knew the times to catch the best pickings from the refuse!
Other birds with the Gulls... Starling - guessing at around 200+ (When they weren't swirling around with the Gulls, they were resting on the overhead railway lines leading to Kirkmanshulme Lane Rail Depot, loads of them) Magpie - maybe 20 Carrion Crows and Jackdaws Pied Wagtail - 4
This site isn't too far from where I live so well worth another look for any possible rarities in the feeding Gulls.

Burleigh rd Stretford, street tree feeders -
Just had a visit from a crow ( a street rarity ). The usual squabbling mass of 20 - 30 green and goldfinch present EXPLODED like a star- shell, with each bird shooting off in a different direction . . .
What a sight !
The crow did'nt bother with the feeders and only stayed a few seconds .
Looks like it fancied a finch . (Saw a magpie do the same . . . . It came in at top speed with it's claws up and went right through the tree. I don't know if it took a bird . It was definately trying for one .

Burleigh rd street tree feeders . . . .
Returned home at 2.30pm and found a mass brawl between Goldfinch and Greenfinch going on at the feeders .
With only 8 ports available to the birds I had to do something so the weaker birds could get a chance. I decided to put up an extra feeder.
The birds moved to a nearby tree and I was able to get a proper count. I got to 40 before someone slammed a car door shut ! (And panicked all the birds .)
It looked like 10 not counted.
So c50 birds present which did'nt include any house sparrow .
After putting the extra feeder in place, the birds only came back in dribs and drabs.
I filled the feeders again today (thurs 01.01.15 ) at 11.45 and the birds arrived within a minute . "feed em and they will come! "
