Then we're implying the car park isn't?
Used by let's say an average of at least 150 cars a day (and that's a very low estimate I would think) how many incidents of criminality are we aware of? I personally know of two and that's going back as far as I can remember, which now stretches back fifteen years, with the fifteen before that now a fading memory unfortunately! That's a particularly low crime rate for any car park in Greater Manchester, even if you add on several incidents which may not have been reported etc. How long do we think it would take for criminals to exploit lots of cars parking in the much quieter and at the beck and call of the local council estate, Common Lane? A mate's mum lives along there (in fact right opposite where cars can be parked) and it is certainly not the picture of immunity from criminal activity that one might think. Far from it!
Just a thought anyway...

What, a meagre 20p rise in over 5 years? I really couldn't agree less I'm afraid.
The feeding station at Pennington alone cost a small fortune to run and whilst the revenue from the car park itself may not go directly towards it's upkeep, the funding to do so is certainly assisted by it! The new hides there, which we're all happy to use, were built using funding saught with the flash's popularity and it's car park revenue as effective and vital reasoning tools. Encouraging visitors not to use the car park is to assist in the long term demise of funding and therefore the excellent place the flash is. Show me a better equipped site in the county or one with such year round interest and cross-section of species. We might not agree with all Wigan MBC's policies etc but surely we should be encouraging birders to visit and therefore contribute to the continuation of work either being carried out or indeed in the pipeline? Especially in these times when severe cuts are in order and sites like this need all the leverage they can get in obtaining the required funds. I don't doubt the pay and display car park there makes a small fortune and I might not agree with where all that money goes but its a big reason the flash is able to continue in it's day to day running where others cannot.
I see the RSPB have made the was free car park at Binn Green a £1:20 pay and display and all for another nothing extra which it had before, seems okay? I don't begrudge paying there of course as I appreciate the work the RSPB has or is doing and that's despite not agreeing with all their policies. Should we have advised birders visiting the Hollingworth Lake Pied-billed Grebe not to use their pay and display car park too?
We'll pay thousands for our optics, put a fortune in our fuel tanks to get us from site to site but yet begrudge £1:20 to enjoy the object of our 'hobby'. Personally I pay more than that on an ice cream when I go there!
Or you can do as I have always done and get a year parking permit,I think it was about £45 for the year at penny, may seem a lot but 3 visits a week for me 52 weeks a year,it saves me about £100 and I don't have to faff about getting a ticket,so streight on birding when i go on,a small price to pay for my year round pleasure, and less than my daughter pays going for a pitza on a night out.and last time I parked on common lane, which was about 4 years ago,I got back to my car and a group of kids were using my car as a goal post, bouncing footballs off it
