Two Grey Wagtails on the Tame tonight, one appeared to have traces of juvenile plumage, but I was distracted by a Kingfisher and by the time I looked back to the Wagtails, both had flown.

Dipper. R.Tame. In the fast water just downstream of the railway viaduct arches. Bullfinch. Quite a few knocking about around Portland Basin. Greenfinch. Flock of 6+. Black headed Gull. 40+ feeding in field at Plantation Farm. Jay. Moorhen Juvenile. House Martin. 4 at Globe Square.
50+ Hirundine whirling around at 20.30 hrs ... appeared to be all Swallow, getting ready for the off. Swift 1.

Ashton-under-Lyne town centre above the shopping arcade, mid afternoon, 2 or 3 juvenile Starlings and a couple of House Sparrows trying to catch a fairly large Dragonfly, without success I might add. The Dragonfly easily out manoeuvred them all.

Circumnavigation of Buckton Moor this morning:
Castle Lane: Willow Warbler, Blackcap & my first Whitethroat of the year - all singing.
Cowbury Dale: Willow Warblers in profusion, joined by two or three Chiffchaffs. Meadow Pipits galore. Sadly no Common Sandpiper.
Hare Hill: no Hares, no Curlew, no Wheatear, no Ring Ouzel and definitely no Dotterel! Though there was the brightest-plumaged male Linnet I've ever seen.
Buckton Moor: Skylark, 3 Red Grouse.
back along moor edge into Mossley: Lapwings with small chicks. Singing Goldcrest.

Highlights as follows:
Lesser Whitethroat - heard singing twice, unfortunately not seen and probably passed straight through. 2 Raven - my first record in Dukinfield, seen from Crematorium, flying along the valley in the direction of Stalybridge Nuthatch present at both ends of the Crematorium Several Chiffchaff and Blackcap, but only one Willow Warbler Female Grey Wagtail At least five pairs of Canada Geese and two wandering around in the Crematorium between the gravestones! Grey Wagtail pair present 2 Blackcap - male singing on other side of river and a male feeding in brambles Chiffchaff still present on territory Grey Heron over Tulip Foods Dipper At least seven Blackbird present including three in song and a male collecting food
As I walked home a Song Thrush was singing on Crescent Road Also a pair of Woodpigeon displaying

First visit to Coopers Ride, from Alma Bridge side. For an advertised section of the Tame Valley Trail it seems a little unloved and neglected. The area around the entrance seemed to function as a dog toilet, and wellies rather than walking shoes may have been in order. The background sound of terrified pigs squealing as they were delivered to the abbatoir for the entire half hour was a little sobering. Nevertheless, an interesting stretch of the River Tame.
1 Dipper 1 pair of Grey Wagtail 1 pair of Bullfinch 6 Goldfinch 6+ Long-tailed Tits, with 2 pairs, one of which seemed to be carrying nesting material into bramble on the Lancashire bank of the river 6+ Great Tits 6+ Blue Tits 6+ Blackbirds

Late afternoon today
River Tame, Dukinfield
Dipper Kingfisher Pair of Goosander Peregrine - flew along the Ashton by-pass. Adult Grey Heron on roof of one of the Tulip Foods buildings being mobbed relentlessly by 2 Carrion Crows until if flew off upstream Chiffchaff singing 8 Sand Martin around usual nest site Most bizarre though was a drake Gadwall which arrived with a drake Mallard from upstream. This bird flew off downstream and could well be the bird which has been resident at Stamford Park since at least 2010. It would be interesting to know if the Stamford Park bird is still present!

Kingfisher perched briefly and then flew upstream
Pair of Grey Wagtail flycatching. The male here is strongly marked, more so than the male of the pair I saw near Plantation Farm at weekend
