I saw 4 waxwings this morning in our front garden in Shaw. At most 20 feet away! Bright sun, so a lovely view of the birds. They ate cotoneaster berries, preened a bit, looked around, pooed a few times, ate a bit more, then eventually flew away.

However many were in the flock, it's more than I've seen this winter (personal total - one (outside the county)). Divorce beckons!!

About 15 Waxwings seen near the Doctors' surgery on the corner of Captain Lees Rd, Westhoughton, at 5.15pm this afternoon. They were in the top of a tall tree on the opposite side of the main road, then flew over into some smaller trees on the edge of the garden opposite to the surgery on Captain Lees Rd, right where I was parked, stayed for about 20 seconds only! Cheers for the text Sid. An extremely short session on the way to the match was rewarded with another 3 Waxwings ringed taking the total to 24 for this site. As Sid says his wife had the privilege of releasing one of the birds. Now I am rubbish with names? One of the couples that turned up yesterday morning were passing through Hale at just the right time it seemed, and saw me extracting one of the Waxwings from the mist net. They got the treat we failed with yesterday and got to see these birds up close, a simple explanation on plumage, age and sex and as with Mrs Ashton they got to release one of the birds, this time a special moment as it sat motionless for a moment before retreating to flock.
Cheers Jason

In between feeds the birds went over Ashley Road to the tall tree behind the shops next to the library where there was a small group when I first arrived this morning. I have seen the birds in that tree 2 or 3 times during the week.
I stood watching the birds feed from about 5m in front of the berry tree and they were not disturbed but interestingly when I tried sitting on the bench also about 5m to the left of the tree briefly, they didn't come to feed .

(no) Waxwings in Hale!
Unfortunately due to circumstances beyond (even) my control no Waxwings were ringed at the bowling green this morning, due to the fact there were no Waxwings. A healthy gathering of ringers and GM birders turned out only to be foiled by these winged beauties. 2 adult Redwing were scant consolation early on but very welcome. Although the main prize was absent the atmosphere was brilliant, leaflets were handed out and it was great just explaining what it we (ringers) do and why we do it and what we do with the data. It seems Sid, Phil and Melanie go lucky with the last 2 days and I was the luckiest of them all. As I said this morning if other opportunities arise I will make an open invitation for people to come and see what we do and hopefully see a Waxwing? I am thinking of engaging in a colour ringing project as part of studies being carried out by the Grampian Ringing Group, starting next winter. So, the more sightings the better, and better still if I can erect a net a catch some.
Cheers Jason
