Little Woolden Moss LWT 14/06/23
An evening visit and delighted to see a male Black Grouse around the pools at the western end. Bizarre even when you're aware of the possibility, so no idea what it might have been like to see it with no warning.
It was sat in the open on the peat bank behind the pools, did a bit of preening and some pecking around and essentially allowed good long views. The main thing I noted from my limited experience of the species was a brownish tone, although it was right in the low sunlight. But the typical World's End views are jet black birds with bright white markings, this bird looked brownish and the white wingbar was dull too. It looked fairly lean in some poses but then heavier in others, but the overall impression was that it might be an immature and essentially not in breeding/lekking condition for whatever reason.
Also heard a Quail and several Meadow Pipits, Reed Buntings and Willow Warblers were singing, Oystercatchers and Redshank on the pools

A bit of drama when a Carrion Crow attacked a Redshank (young bird) pinning it down in the water and pecking at it. Pandemonium set in with all the other Redshanks, Oystercatchers and some of the Lapwings frantically mobbing the crow. The crow gave up and returned to feed on the Black-headed Gull carcass it had previously been feeding on. The Redshank escaped by swimming away and seemed non the worse for its ordeal.
Just off the reserve: 2 Quail singing - 1 in the fields to the north and 1 in the field to the east.
Quail this evening singing from arable field north of Little Woolden Moss LWT. Also 2 singing Yellowhameers, a really showy singing Corn Bunting and a Yellow Wagtail taking food to a nest nearby. 8 Oystercatchers, 2 Curlew and 2 Redshank on Little Woolden Moss LWT.

Marsh Harrier - 4 sightings, at least 2 possibly 3 birds...
Female? - definitely all brown with golden head, quartering for a bit then landed in middle of reserve
Juvenile I think, being mobbed (Lapwings of course) at W end, couldn't see tops of wings (against the light) but the underneath was not "single colour" so I think it was different bird to no 1
W end again, almost certainly same bird as no 2, being mobbed again
E end flying E, male definitely not the same bird as no 1, probably not no 2&3 (but these weren't good enough views to be certain) unless it had sneaked up the whole length of the reserve in little time and unseen
Other sightings of interest...
Redshank - 2, they appear to be easily alarmed by anything going along the path
Grey Heron - 2, mobbed by the Lapwings at one stage
Lapwings - many, some young
Oystercatchers - 3
Willow Warblers - 3 seen, many more singing unseen
Yellow Wagtail - 1
Curlew - 1 not sure if it ended up landing at the W end or not

What surely has to go down as one of the most crazy sightings for the mosses and one I almost couldnt believe what I was seeing when a male BLACK GROUSE flew across the reserve! Quite incredible and anyones guess as to where this has come from!
Other highlights: 3 Marsh Harrier - 1 immature male hunting fields just off the reserve and 2 female (one in heavy wing moult) 2 Hobbies putting on great display hawking dragonflies low over the pools. One also in a skirmish with a Marsh Harrier. 3 Kestrel 4 Buzzard 3 Redshank - pair and one well-grown young 4 Oystercatcher 1 Curlew 2 Sedge Warbler singing
Chat Moss 1 Quail singing 1 Cuckoo heard very distantly towards Astley Moss 1 Bullfinch
Chat Moss 16:45 - 20:25
Adult Mediterranean gull over Cutnook Lane amongst the usual black-headed gulls and lesser black-backs. Nice to see so many young titmice along the lane, including a family of about twenty long-tailed tits. A couple of dozen singing willow warblers in the woods North of Twelve Yards Road, also chiffchaffs, blackcaps and whitethroats, including a family of four youngsters. Cuckoo calling from over near the railway line. Couple of immature kestrels hunting the fields around Four Lanes End.
Very brief foray into Little Woolden Moss, about a dozen singing willow warblers, twenty swifts overhead.
