Had a couple of hours here this afternoon.
Main birds of note were:
1 Common/Arctic juv tern. I initially spotted the tern from Horrocks hide as it was in flight over at the west end. Got a bit excited at first as I hoped it would be a Whiskered but as it came closer it became evident it wasn't. The bird eventually perched up in good view and I noted it's deep red bill, some slight gingering above the bill, a dark edge to the wing shoulder and a scaly grey pattern to it's plumage. From the bird guide on my iPhone it appeared to be a juvenile Common Tern but I later bumped into John Tymon who had also seen the bird and photographed it. From his flight shots the bird showed a light edge to it's secondaries which in Johns opinion seemed to suggest it was a juvenile Arctic Tern. Anyway, after a bit of debate it was suggested he send the shots to Ian for his opinion.
Other birds seen were:
Pintail (f) from Rammies Little Grebe Goosander (f) from Teal hide Grey Wagtail over Horrocks hide 2 Common Gull from Horrocks. Buzzard chased by crows over Tom Edmonson hide. Sparrowhawk (m) over Pengies 3 Fieldfare and 6 Redwing feeding on Hawthorn berries near Rammies reedbed.
about 85 Jackdaws from south side roost harassing gulls
small number of Redwing and Fieldfare roosting nr Sorrowcow
1 Goosander at west end

I too was at Penny for about five hours today, also seeing the kingfisher, 3 green sands and blackcaps heard in three different places. A female sparrowhawk came marauding through the feeding station. A few swallows filtered through (10+). But I was there mainly to photograph Migrant Hawkers, which I managed to do pretty successfully. Great place Penny for much more than the birds.
Cheers,
