A decent afternoon for Ducks at Chorlton. The Lake is almost frozen apart from a small patch of open water close to the Island. With other areas such as Broad Ees Dole being totally frozen, this has no doubt brought them in.
Missed the pochards yesterday, Paul, but did see a solitary male goldeneye, and a kingfisher in the trees by the lake adjacent to the children's play area. Also picked up 5 pairs of goosander.

1 kingfisher, i just got the west end & it was sat on a branch with a tiddler bashing it on the branch a few times then swallowing it 9 siskins 3 lesser redpolls 8 goosanders 5m 3f 28 pochards 23 tufted ducks 2 grey herons 1 little grebe 2 great crested grebes 2 mute swans 3 common gulls plus b h gulls, coots, moorhens & canada geese
feeding station.. 2 reed buntings 2 collared doves 15 redwings plus blue tits, great tits, chaffinches, house sparrows & robins.
on river.. 3 goosanders 2m 1f 3 grey wagtails 2 pied wagtails 1 cormorant plus mallards & canada geese no signs off the mandarins.

40+ Tufties (mostly sheltering in the lee but a few scattered about the lake) 20+ Pochard (in the lee) 7 Goosander (4 male, 3 female) and, as well as the large numbers of Coot, Mallard and Black-headed Gulls solitary Mute Swan and Moorhen.
No Great Crested Grebes, No Goldeneye.

Late post for yesterday 09/01/12 12:00 - 13:00 , A damp,drizzly trudge round the lake produced the following highlights : Kingfisher across towards reedbed, Large flock ,40 + goldfinch, 8 siskin and 2 lesser redpoll on alders , M +F bullfinch near Barlow Tip, 30 + tufted duck , 20 + pochard, ( All asleep under overhanging branches ,around island,). 4 G C grebes.

This afternoon saw 6 cormorants flying in formation down the chester rd and then a flock of 100 lapwings flapping about over the atlantic road indsutrial estate in Altrincham.

Highlights :
3 M + 2 F widgeon,loosely associating with tufties.
2 M pochard asleep near Heron Island.
40 + tufted ducks.
2 grey wagtail.
Numerous flocks of long tailed tits.
4 great crested grebe.
And finally 12 whooper swans over roughly S.E. @ 13:50.
