about 30% of young racing pigeons dissapear on thier first races, thats because they join up with ferel pigeons and decide its a better life on the city streets than being sent to france every other weekend to have to fly back 300 miles, for nothing,So many street pigeons you will find have racing rings
try telling that to the pigeons owner

Thanks for the link. Great to watch them in real time. See a fleeting glance of the parents quite often, I walk past the building the nest is on most days, going to and from work, always have a glance up. Just hope I am in the right place at the right time when they fledge. Wonder if they will like the occasional "E".

Maybe someone could pick these rings up when the young are being ringed, or after they have fledged.

Hi Sid The smaller chick does seem to get bullied by the 3 larger chicks and I suppose that if the parents didn't bring enough food in then the little chick could end up as dinner itself. Having said that, the parents are bringing plenty of prey to the nest and all the chicks are being fed. It is certainly great to watch whats going on at the nest. Also there seems to be a couple of coloured rings in the box, a yellow over green/blue on a detached leg nearest the camera and another blue or green ring on the far side of the box.

Have been watching the live feed for a few days and notice that the development of one of the chicks seems to be a little behind its siblings - they seem to be lying on top of it when it is sleeping and when it comes to feeding it doesn't appear to be getting its share - hope it's ok

All in all great day, cant wait for my second time helping out !

Female seen circling Arndale House 1.15pm today. There was another bird sitting on the rail on top of the same building, unfortunately i didn't have by bins with me so i couldn't identify it due to the distance. A single Buzzard had the audacity to fly across the city and was duly escorted over to Salford by the female. (however the best was yet to come) A short time later i caught sight of 5 raptors in the air over St Annes Square. All 5 birds came into clear view over the Triangle and Cathedral. It was 3 Buzzards and 2 Peregrines. These were quickly joined by 2 more Peregrines and a Kestrel. I couldn't believe it, 8 raptors in the air at once over the city centre. When i worked there in the 90's we were lucky to see the occasional Kestrel. Anyhow, the birds remained over the Triangle for a few minutes then the Buzzards headed off towards the Ardwick direction. The Kestrel headed back towards the cathedral (possibly one of the cathedral pair). The resident Peregrines stayed in the area and a i caught a glimpse of 2 other raptors dive bombing near to the Cis building. Unbelievable !!!!!!!!!!!!
I've said it before and i'll say it again, I cannot believe that whilst this was all going on there were hundreds of shoppers going about their business completely unaware of the spectacle above them. Human ignorance. Priceless !!!
Don't think we need to worry too much, Jill. Security at the nest building is very tight. Staff at the only building which has a good overview have been well-informed by Adrian and keep a good lookout for the birds.

It appears that the link that had previously been given was available on the internet albeit that it had not been intended. The RSPB have no current proposals to remove the availability of the link from the public . However they wish to point out that live streaming will be available from another hosting service in due course which I am sure everyone will be delighted with.
Dear Mrs Peregrine,
Your complaint would have more weight if you weren't prone to the most blatant exibitionism during your recent courtship resulting in severe embarrasment to many city centre dwellers and workers.
Try shutting the curtains now and again....
Steve Christmas said

To whom it may concern:
I wish to register a complaint. Since my husband and I returned to our high rise flat in the City Centre a few weeks ago we were horrified to find a surveillance camera pointed directly at us 24 hours a day. I am aware that Britain has the highest ratio of surveillance cameras to people but we would rather that this is not extended to include raptors. As if this invasion of privacy was not bad enough, we now find that live pictures of us at home are being transmitted on the world wide web. Furthermore, our domestic situation is being actively discussed, intrusive questions asked about my identity and lewd comments made exhorting me to produce another egg. If this breach of confidentiality continues we will have no option but to instigate a media blackout. We will be in touch again in late June with an update on the progress of our family.
Yours indignantly,
Mrs Peregrine Falcon

If anyone has a link to the webcam then please note that it is not intended for public viewing. It seems that the link got out onto the public domain without the consent of the RSPB. If anyone has included the link on their own website or onto any other website then I would respectfully ask that it be removed.
The RSPB will be providing a live feed in due course and given that it was not known what site the birds would nest at this year the RSPB should be congratulated for committing the resources and effort into providing a live feed. I am sure the RSPB will not have any issues with linking when the webcam feed goes public.
It's not just a question of money....these are schedule 1 birds nesting on a privately owned building and any filming that is organised has to be done with consent of building/land owners. The peregrine project is a partnership project. If the cost of filming and ringing etc were paid for it would take a bit a bit more than just a few quid chucked into a pot! There is an awful lot of goodwill provided that most folk grossly underestimate.
If anyone has any concerns please contact me directly.
Kind regards and looking forward to a great peregrine year!

Whilst I agree your frustration to a degree and would happily throw in the odd half crown myself I think we should adopt the glass half full approach and appreciate the superb resource that it is.
