Well put Ian. The car park at Elton has had a history of problems, it's not a new thing. I've checked and there have been many car fires here over the years (most if not all previously stolen from elsewhere then dumped and fired here). Yes, we should rightly be cautious birding and leaving our cars anywhere in the county (there are much worse locations than here!) but once it puts us off going there it's us and the wildlife that looses out. The respective public services (council, police, fire service) have a responsibility to actively seek measures to control or erradicate issues such as these effecting Elton. Yes it's not easy for them but the days of shoulder shrugging and 'lip service' have gone, they really have to actively act upon any complaint they receive. Keep complaining and if nothing gets done threaten to complain about their lack of effort instead.
These are ours and wildlifes refuges and at some point, if we care enough, we must actively act to keep them that way. I believe we loose our right to moan and groan if we do nothing about some of these issues and either ignore them or abandon places. Where will we go if they all go the same way?

elton has had a bit of bad press recently with reason. It is a neglected place but i had a good 4 hours today and saw a common tern 3 oysters catchers (Poss Juvenile) a chiff chaff gold finch flock,gc grebe, heron and the resident little grebe as well as a wealth of insects and fauna and a long chat with a very nice dog walker about midgy bites. Perhaps the issue is not so much avoid the area but park in nearby streets, Buckinghsm drive. It is a great place for a walk and a relax and not on to avoid.
