23rd March.
7.30 - 9.50 am.
Third time lucky for Water Rail this morning.
The other bird I came specifically to look for was Willow Tit. I am fairly sure one was singing in the Dip on 18/3. No sounds at 7.45 am but one was possibly singing here again around 9.30 am but I could not get to see the bird as it moved about pretty quickly, as it sang from different song posts, before moving on. Will have to go down just as a "maybe" - I would like to have seen the bird to be sure that it wasn't just a Great Tit using it's mimicry skills!
Chiffchaff and Mistle Thrush both singing in the Dip. 1 Jay here. Kestrel near the canal.
Kingfisher along the canal, 4 Sand Martins over the reservoir. 2 Oystercatcher, 2 Ringed Plover. 14 Linnet including 2 singing males.
At 8.00 am a Mink ran, as bold as brass, along the centre of the towpath of the canal in full view for maybe 100 yards or so.
Cheers,
Bill.

11th March.
7.30 to 9.30 am.
First visit to this site - didn't manage to pick up anything the regulars haven't - plus I missed Water Rail!
Elton - 4 Cormorant, 2 Greylags with the Canadas, 2 Oystercatcher, 1 Sparrowhawk, 2 Goosander and a pair of Long-tailed Tits nest building.
Withins - 2 Great Crested Grebe - they didn't appear to be a pair, looking at the aggressive postures they adopted towards each other! 1 Grey Wagtail near the outflow. Was sat on the stone wall of the outflow from Withins having a cup of coffee out of my flask when a Kingfisher flew just a few feet in front on me - now you just don't get that kind of added extra at your local Starbucks do you! 2 singing Skylarks and 4 displaying Lapwing. 1 Grey Heron.
At least 9 Reed Buntings in the general area of Elton/Withins - 3 singing around Elton and 1 near Withins.
Lots of exposed mud on Elton - looks good for spring passage.
Cheers,
Bill.
