Hi Dave, the other roof you are referring to is likely to be BCA (British Car Auctions) where a lot of the Gulls rest in between yard activity / feeding. Ive put a little explanation on here a while back about the easiest ways to view the Gulls, basically its a triangle with Hyde Rd/Redgate La/Pottery La, and most of the rooves are visible from one point or another. As Ive said before to people whove asked me when is the best time to see the Gulls... its impossible for me to predict that, and I wouldnt expect anyone to rock up and assume the Gulls to be showing well, you have to account for birds not showing whenever or wherever you go to see them. Ive had plenty of breaks and visits where Ive seen absolutely nothing so my apologies if my posts make it look like the Gulls are always there showing well on the 384 roof, Ill always put an update on whenever I can, if Im in the area. Cheers

I have been twice to see the Iceland Gull at Redgate Recycling, yesterday and today. Yesterday I managed to see the bird in flight only on 2 occasions in 2 hours. So going for a better look today, and with the bird being reported at around 9-15am, I arrived at 11am. After searching the gulls on "384" building without any joy I had a walk up Redgate Lane and saw the bird on a roof about 150 yards from "384", it flew off in the direction of Hyde Road. At around 12-30pm it was seen in flight near "384" but did not land on it. My point of all this is dont expect the bird to be sat on the roof waiting for you! Keep the updates coming Rob Creek.

Richard, judging by your Iceland Gull image, you mustve been stood at the main gates when they were locking up, sorry I didnt get to really meet you, I was too busy scanning the other Gulls. Did you ask me about the length of the legs on that immature Herring Gull?
Im really happy more people are turning up at Redgate now, seems to be developing into a quality site in my view.
Yup, I'm guilty as charged! I was unfortunately caught at a disadvantage at the time because I didn't realise the gulls would have been so far away. At least i did get to see you, (or at least briefly). I'm impressed with your knowledge of gulls, certainly exceeding my own. Although I'm currently still a bit rusty after a several months of little birding. After this trip though, I'm glad I now know what to look for in the 1st winter caspian gull.
I'm hoping to make another attempt at some stage, but, I won't go anywhere or "twich" anything unless I feel it's worth the effort.
Many thanks!

Good to meet all the very helpful Gullers and birders, on my first visit to Redgate Lane.
Pete Kinsella and Mark Nightingale had the 1rst. w Caspian Gull lined up on the auction roof, and the juvenile Iceland Gull was present most of the time.
As they were departing, I asked them to come back and look at what I think was X106 3rd w. Caspian. (I could not fully discern the numbers) However the bird moved away.
Rob Creek, Richard Thew, and Pete Berry arrived.
My first Caspian Gull plus some much needed 'gullers tips'.

The 1stw Caspian Gull present today appears to have some damage to P8 on the right wing, so this individual may be trackable elsewhere if this feature is seen. Great views of the juv Iceland Gull too and at least 4 argentatus Herring Gulls also present.
I decided to attempt to find my 1st ever caspian gull, I got there in the afternoon and bumped into one of the other Forum guys (my appologies as I've always been terrible remembering names).
Unfortunately I didn't think that there would be a need for a fieldscope, which ment I had to rely on any kindness from anyone else who had one. As it happens, the caspian gulls sadly didn't show, but my efforts weren't waisted as i quickly spotted the 1st winter Iceland gull which later showed very well for a few moments and I've finally managed to get some very decent pictures of one when it landed (or be it with light direction issues).
My potential caspian lifer will have to wait for another time in the future. I'm sure another opportunity will arise!
The Black-headed Gull TN5V yellow mentioned below was at Audenshaw reservoir on 1st July 2018, ringed as an adult near Lodz Poland on the 8th June 2018

Caspian Gull 3rd winter X106. Bill Mulligan had it in the scope when I arrived at 11.15, where it was mostly sat on the roof of Stoodley Vehicle Auctions before flying over the Redgate Recycling Centre at 11.28.
Had a reply this morning from Mike Jackson regarding the Herring Gull Y:K40 I saw at Redgate on Xmas Eve afternoon, and its yet another York ringed Gull. They seem to like it in GM.
