Popped up onto the Great Orme today to try to see the Firecrest reproted there for the last 2 days. Despite a thorough search of the Priory gardens trees my only bird of note was a single Goldcrest. The high winds made for difficult searching but the sunshine made it more bearable. Ravens showed off their aerobatic abilities off the cliffs and a large passage of Gannets was evident. Yesterday there was a Red-backed Shrike up there & there have been a couple of Lapland Buntings seen recently as well as a Redstart. So well worth a visit at the moment

Late report from yesterday.
I did five hours out on a fishing boat about four miles out from Rhyl. Not that much around really apart from the usual Herring and Lesser Black backed gulls. A few small groups of Common Scoter passed us occasionally along with the odd Gannet, Kittiwake and Sandwich Tern.
The best point was when a Great Skua flew about a hundred yards from the boat and then chased down a Sandwich Tern forcing it to drop its catch. The Skua then flew down to eat its I'll gotten gains before proceeding on westwards. A good bird to see at a closer than usual range.

Snow Bunting? Unfortunately didn't have enough clear sightings to fully identify. 16.30 - 19.00 Bird seen with a mixed flock of linnets & finches near rock formation known as the Free Trade Loaf & near point 7 of nature trail. Mixed flock c80 mostly greenfinches and linnets, but also some goldfinches, feeding on freshly cut fields over wall next to footpath. 'Snow Bunting' landed briefly on wall - general overall white appearence drew attention - white belly with slight streaking / dark back. Lost sight in flock - then relocated in feild, then on wire fence and in flight, but all very fleeting, distant views and therefore unable to rule out possible albinism or leucism in a finch or linnet.

Hi people,
http://www.rspb.org.uk/events/details.a ... m:9-317592 as some of you may know the POA can be a spectacular place to see terns during August. If you want the lowdown form the local RSPB guys then book a place on this guided walk by phoning 0151 353 8478 or email deeestuary@rspb.org.uk
This is a booking event with a small charge.
We would expect to see near on a 1000 terns mainly sandwich but little, common, arctic terns are regular too.

Cursed not having my bins in the car but still picked out a flock of Manx Shearwater cruising past about 60m out and a couple of small white rumped birds low down along the beach - probably House Martins but I couldn't be sure they weren't Storm Petrels.

My friend and I were at Rhos yesterday morning when the Rose Coloured Starling was showing very well on marine Drive. It seemed to dissapear just as the ITV Wales camera team turned up.
While there I turned around and scanned the sea and picked up a Tern species. I am no expert on Terns in flight and can not distinguish between a Common or Artic unless I get a decent view of the bill.
However this Tern had a black bill and it had the full black head with no white on the fore head. It was the size of a Common Tern as I did get a close view of the Tern and it was not a Sandwich Tern as it was too small and the bill had no yellow tip. It tended to dive into to the water from a low hight and seemed to accelerate into the sea at about a 40 degree angle and seemed to go fairly deep. It was quite a light coloured bird and wonderd if it was a Roseate Tern but I have not not heard them reported there. I wondered if anyone one else picked it up.

10.30 - 13.15:- a pleasantly mild morning for Mr Barber and myself to be standing on Marine Drive at Rhos- on-Sea awaiting the return of the adult Rose-coloured-Starling that hadn't been seen since 08.20.
Eventually two hours after we arrived the bird returned to no. 69, although it didn't go on the feeders we had nice views of it on the roof. Later, after it had a bit of a fly round with half a dozen common Starlings it returned and we watched it again as it was having a drink from the roof gutter. As Rob and Nick said a lovely bird.
Felt a bit sorry for the couple who had driven up from Norfolk this morning and had just missed it at 08.20 and had to leave before it came back the first time. Fortunately they had good views of its gutter appearance
The press were there this morning as there is quite a bit of local interest.
Also seen of general interest; Rock Pipit and a couple of Sandwich Terns fishing just off the rocks at high tide.

Like Rob, I too popped down to Rhos-on-sea this morning for the Rose coloured Starling, and what a bird!!
It showed itself off beautifully to the 20 or so birders present with views to 15 metres. Completely unphased by all the attention it was getting it happily fed on the feeders in the front garden of the property on Marine Drive.
A absolutely stunning bird in full adult plumage. A subtle pink chest and underparts and back contrasting with glossy black wings, tail and head and also showing one hell of a mullet. It reminded me of Gregor Fisher playing the guy in the Castella advert with the uncontrollable 'comb over' at times.
Shots on my flickr page if anyones interested.

Rather regretted electing to watching the England match Friday evening instead of travelling down to Criccieth overnight, as had been my intention when I looked at the weather forecast yesterday - over 100 Storm Petrels went through this morning! However, after calling in at several places on the journey down, I arrived there around 4.00pm, well in time for the high tide. Within minutes I had my first two Stormies, pattering over the water in the strong wind. I'm useless at counting birds but I estimate I saw between 20-30 over the next few hours. Around 5.30pm I picked up a group of seven Pomarine Skuas which gave excellent views. Other seabirds were rather sparse, just a few Manx Shearwaters (though hundreds had been through in the morning apparently), the odd Fulmar, plenty of distant Gannets, etc.
Lovely to meet Vivien Finn, a birder from Warrington

Had a fairly damp and unproductive morning with the Manx Birder in the Principality starting on the Great Orme where we saw very little then on the walk up to Aber Falls where we saw even less The sum total of both places was a few Wheatear, Linnet, singles of Whitethroat and Garden Warbler and two calling Cuckoo.
Things took a turn for the better at South Stack where we had a few firsts for the year:- Guillemot, Razorbill, Gannet, Fulmar, Kitiwake, Chough and two Puffins and again several Wheatear. The Chough was giving a marauding Raven a hard time. We were half way down the steps to the lighthouse when the rain kicked in again .

We were told that another smaller lekking area held another half-dozen birds. Further down the valley, several Redstarts were in song and giving really nice views. Altogether, a brilliant experience, I've seen a lot of Black Grouse but nevr at such short range - down to 30 metres!

A day off work today and all to myself for a change so a trip out was called for.
First stop this morning saw John Barber and myself on the Great Orme at 7.00am. As soon as we got out of the car we knew it was going to be difficult. The wind from the west was really strong and very cold. We didn't hold much hope of seeing much. That said though, there were quite good numbers of birds around. Several small flocks of Goldfinch and Linnets moved about along with the odd chaffinch. Meadow pipits were everywhere and we also managed to find 6 Wheatear too. The odd Fulmar and Raven made a fly past and two Ravens were happily feasting on a dead lamb in the farmers field as well.
From there we moved on to the Little Orme which was only slightly calmer. Again, the odd Fulmar was seen along with several Greenfinch and Chaffinch up near to the quarry. One or two Ravens flew by and the local Jackdaws were having a few territorial squabbles. John also managed to find a male Blackcap too down in the scrub near the base.
After a warm up in the car we decided somewhere calmer was required so we headed over to RSPB Conwy.
As the tide was out then the pools were fairly quiet. Main sightings were as follows:
At least 7 Red Breasted Merganser - a couple of the males actually displaying to a female too which was nice to see. c10 Wigeon 6 Black Tailed Godwit c40 Sand Martin 3 Swallow 6 Chiffchaff heard 4 Redshank 1 Little Egret 2 White Wagtail c7 Teal
On the Estuary there were good numbers of Shelduck and Curlew as well.
A nice but cold morning really and back home for just after 1.00pm so not too bad.

Rhosneigr is good for terns Joey. It's worth scanning the islets in the area for returning birds. There could be some late Purple Sandpipers in Trearddur Bay. Malltreath Marsh and Newborough Forest are excellent destinations with Spotted Redshank and raptors at the former, plus Crossbill and Red Squirrel at the latter site. South Stack is hotting up. A few Puffins to be seen now. Rarity-wise, the Cefni Estuary had an Osprey and Holyhead town a Rose-coloured Starling today.

Footpath still closed today
Only small groups of Common Scoter around now - big flock has gone
At Llandulas there is strong smell of fuel oil from the grounded ship which may have put them off.
At Pensarn there were small numbers of Red-throated Diver - coming into breeding plumage.
Whilst scanning some Linnets, some scally deliberately threw a ball at them for his scabby dog to chase and put them up. In the departing flock was one bird with black and white wings - a male Snow Bunting.

Had an early start for a combined walking/birding morning in and around Clocaenog Forest loads of Siskin, Crossbill, Goldcrests and Willow Warblers with highlights being:
. Black Grouse - heard a few bubbling away but not seen . Great Grey Shrike at Craig Bron Bonag [600m NW of the summit near the tall mast and at one point in the same tree as a Great Spotted Woodpecker!] . A short section of song heard which just triggered "Tree Pipit" in my head but would be a very early return so maybe a talented mimic amongst the local Meadow Pipits . Male Crossbill flew into a tree about four metres in front of me at Bod Petrual . Goshawk calling from very close by on one forest track but sadly didn't even get a glimpse - but the call was worth it!

Rose-coloured Starling still showing well on chimney pots & aerials in the vicinity of Abbey Rd / Marine Drive. Disappeared for almost an hour before a fly around roofs & lamp posts but no evening visit to feeders. Went to roost 19.40

4 Red-throated Divers
6 Red-breasted Mergansers
2 Eiders
2 Arctic Terns
1 Sandwich Tern
20+ Gannets
At Southstack (only had 30 mins to spare) all the auks had gone back out to sea and a single Puffin was the only one present. In the horse paddocks were a minimum of 37 Wheatears and a Redstart with 5 Stonechats about. Also saw 5 Choughs, a pair of Ravens (one of which was taking eggs from the nest of a ground nesting bird), 2 Rock Pipits, 20+ Kittiwakes and 14 Fulmars

At least 7 Red Breasted Merganser - a couple of the males actually displaying to a female too which was nice to see.
c10 Wigeon
6 Black Tailed Godwit
c40 Sand Martin
3 Swallow
6 Chiffchaff heard
4 Redshank
1 Little Egret
2 White Wagtail
c7 Teal
Cheers.
Henry.
You'll need a telescope though for things like the Scoters and Divers offshore - from Pensarn beach the Red-throated Divers were pretty close in.
Thanks in advance,
Joey
Only small groups of Common Scoter around now - big flock has gone
At Llandulas there is strong smell of fuel oil from the grounded ship which may have put them off.
At Pensarn there were small numbers of Red-throated Diver - coming into breeding plumage.
Whilst scanning some Linnets, some scally deliberately threw a ball at them for his scabby dog to chase and put them up. In the departing flock was one bird with black and white wings - a male Snow Bunting.
Didnt get to see the hoped for Surf Scoter but still an enjoyable visit

. Black Grouse - heard a few bubbling away but not seen
. Great Grey Shrike at Craig Bron Bonag [600m NW of the summit near the tall mast and at one point in the same tree as a Great Spotted Woodpecker!]
. A short section of song heard which just triggered "Tree Pipit" in my head but would be a very early return so maybe a talented mimic amongst the local Meadow Pipits
. Male Crossbill flew into a tree about four metres in front of me at Bod Petrual
. Goshawk calling from very close by on one forest track but sadly didn't even get a glimpse - but the call was worth it!
