- A belated report of my visit of Sunday 14th Aug.
I arrived at 7 a.m. and spent an hour and a half covering most sections, (getting wet trousers in the process while negotiating the overgrown paths).
Highlights of only 31 species (= a little "steady") amongst the usual cast were two Green Sandpipers, (the only waders present).
A distant calling Buzzard remained unseen, but the best entertainment was provided by a young female Sparrowhawk, calling intermittently and interacting with Jays, Magpies and the odd Woodpigeon. The Sparrowhawk was chasing each of these every few minutes, then would perch up quite close to them as if it was one of the gang, (almost as if having a breather), during which time they would taunt it at close quarters, following which after a short interval the chases would resume again. I gained the impression that the raptor instinctively of course knew it had to chase other birds, though without really knowing too much about the endgame procedure, or that it should really try ambushing smaller birds at first until it gained a bit more competence.
