Also sighted: Goldfinch, Greenfinch, Chaffinch, Blackbird , Blue Tit , Long-tailed Tit, Great Tit, Robin, Heron, Magpie, Carrion Crow, House Sparrow, Starling.
This was my first vist to Elton and a very interesting place, I was very surprised only twenty minutes walk from the town centre . With easy access for me from Ashton-under -Lyne via public transport no wonder it is one of the top spots for birding in Greater Manchester. I particular enjoyed the prospects of the habitat along the canal with the fields and also the dip I can't wait to return.

A swan was collected from location yesterday and taken to RSPCA wildlife hospital,
due to be released later this week, may have been the same bird.

Roy Hodkinson has one of my swan hooks, Rob, and is pretty good with swans! Saved me a trip over - already had an oiled bird in the back garden which was due to be returned to Three Sisters. The ranger there told me they'd found 2 half-eaten birds there (there were 50 on the WeBS count) possibly the result of a panther attack!!!!

Pete. Got to Elton for 7.30 with my friend and had a 2 hour walk round the res and to Withins but no trace of the swan. Asked any walkers re obs for a swan in distress but neg response. If you get to know of any further sightings Pete and need any help let me know.. My mate used to be the GMP wildlife officer and has removed fishing line from Swans quite a few times and is willing to turn out again if its needed. (Saw a Shelduck and 2 Oystercatchers whilst on the hunt) Thanks. Rpob Archer

Re my last ...Just rang him and got him out of his scratcher...Meeting me there at 7.30 with some kit to try to sort the swan. He used to have a big 12ft pole for catching them but not any more so hopefully a handball job will work.

Whilst walking past Withins Res. around 16:30 I noticed a juvenile Mute Swan with fishing line stuck round its mouth and all of its neck is badly swollen. The light was fading and it was too late to do anything about it. By the time I get home from work in the week it's dark. Can anyone out there catch it and provide assistance? I shall ring the RSPCA but whether they can do anything about it remains to be seen. If anybody attempts to catch it all you need is some bread to entice it ashore. If it can be caught and brought to my house (in Radcliffe) I would be happy to take it to a vet.

Just run a report off Birdtrack to show species recorded for SD70 (which is basically Elton / Withins and surrounding area). It lists a total of 211 species and also species sightings specifically by year from 2007 to 2011. I was surprised by some of the sightings in the last 5 years. Can anyone remember any of these?

1130 till 1400 no sign of dipper, thanks for the info, the only weir i can find is the one just down from the concrete bridge, followed the track under the tram bridge to the back of derby high school and along to warth rd but couldnt find a way back to the river, thanks for the pm ian, i will keep looking. aprox 150 pink footed geese over heading west at 1330.

you went to far mate, once you reach the bike track, follow the path to your left, keeping the bike track on your right. will bring you under the tram track and out to the back of the derby high school. then turn right hope this helps ,simon

the mounds are also known localy as the plato . were kids used to go on there bikes. if this helps you also get kingfishers along here

My direction are rather poor. If you go accross the stone foot bridge and double back along the river bank the foot path follows the school playing field fence and river then cuts accross to a big mound called lower hinds just to confuse things that is used as a bike track (But is in fact one of the best spots in Bury for wild flowers) it then goes under the railway and comes out at the back of Derby High School. Before you cut accross to the mound just follow the river and you wil see the Weir grid ref SD 79410 09998. The river then flows down past the canal outflow further down 500m. Check it out on Google Maps. It a bit of this site that is overlooked.

Hinds Weir
Walk along the canal op the end where its filled in, past the turn for the dip and keep going. Theres a huge mountain of rubble on the right as you head to Bury between the site of the canal and river. This is the remains of Hinds Mill. As you get to the end of the filled in canal a paralel path runs into the site of the mill. The weir is on the river below the site of the mill viewed from the path going into the mill or a path that runs down the other side of the river at the side of the school and which ends up at warth fold after going under the metro line. You can access the other bank either via the old railway viaduct, which gives good views up and down the river and bury, or the footbridge below it. I've seen it from the weir down stream quite a few times on rocks in the river and flying up or down stream..

Spent a few hours on the south side of Elton today and was delighted to catch up with the famous Rail - which was quite elusive now the ice has gone - apart from when it came to feed on the mealworms and the like I'd thrown out to the edge of the reeds. It sat for a while on a raised reed clump before a passing gull spooked it. Also seen Mute swan pair, Goldeneye, Goosander [m] and Cormorant on the river early on, a few Redwing in the hedges and a sprawk over.

thanks rob. my daughters never seen one. just got back from elton, on far side fed geese as usuall normal stuff over there apart from one lone duck. larger than a mallard, meduim brown head with a white band round its neck, meduim brown body with white and black tips to its tail (new to bird watching so probably something common)

Walked down to Elton from Ramsbottom along the river and back. The river was fairly flowing and carrying lots of sediment ( and rubbish ). Saw the following between 0910 and 1530. 1 m Goosander on the river ( compared to 23 on a similar walk 2 weeks ago) 1 imm Cormorant near Burrs 3 Grey Heron 1 f Sparrowhawk at Burrs. Great views stationary for once. 9 Greenfinch at Summerseat Station. Same sightings as per previous post by Ian Campbell at Elton apart from: c45 Lapwing over about 1300hrs 1 Great Black Backed Gull amongst the small gull roost on the ice 1 Green Woodpecker, 1 GS Woodpecker, 1 Nuthatch Brookbottom Woods

on res pochard, goldeneye, goosander and lots of tufted
1 treecreeper, in hedge on other side of canal from bridge 19 so prob same bird
1 water rail, bennies
1 willow tit showing well, cycle track rear of buckingham drive
2 fieldfare nr crow trees
4 Golden eye two drake
7 Goosander scattered about 3 drake
3 Pochard
Several covers of coots
Several paddling of tufted ducks

Cormerant
1 raven, over the dip
on res goldeneye, pochard,goosander

All of whom were very helpful.

1 f Sparrowhawk at Burrs. Great views stationary for once.
9 Greenfinch at Summerseat Station.
Same sightings as per previous post by Ian Campbell at Elton apart from:
c45 Lapwing over about 1300hrs
1 Great Black Backed Gull amongst the small gull roost on the ice
1 Green Woodpecker, 1 GS Woodpecker, 1 Nuthatch Brookbottom Woods
