Early a.m. on the res. 2 Gadwall, 16 Great Crested Grebe, 1 Pochard, 1 Goosander and a tiny bit of edge along the Northern shore waiting for passing waders, also Peregrine over and 3 Oystercatcher. In surrounding fields displaying Lapwing, 2 singing Skylark and 80+ Fieldfare near Crow Trees. Little Grebe in the dip. Cheers Ian

not much the last few days 2 oystercatcher 1 pochard 2 goosander 1 sparrowhawk little grebe and willow tit in the dip water level slowly dropping but still some way to go yet till we get any shoreline.

0715 till 1315. 1 female stonechat on posts top of withins were the main paths meet. 1 treecreeper, beyond the dip nr concrete foot bridge. not much on res, a few goosanders and tufteds. both water valves have now been opened so we should get some shoreline soon.

7.30-9.30 On res 5 Goosander, 4 Creat Crested Grebe(2 displaying), double figures of Cormorant, heard Oystercatcher and Curlew over. Field by Withins singing Skylark plus another near canal, Lapwings also diplaying over fields. Little Owl near canal and male Kestrel. Swans nest building. Cheers Ian

Belated update for Monday 28th Feb.
4 hour mooch around Elton, (7.30 to 11.45). weather cold/cool, generally dull but some sunny spells and at least it did stay dry.
Little Grebe - 1 Great-crested Grebe - about 6 on main res. and 2 on Withins. Cormorant - about 4 on buoys and res plus 5 on a pylon. Grey Heron - 1 Mute swans Canada Geese - perhaps 60 plus? Usual dodgy Greylag/ Chinese Goose hybrid Mallard Tufted Duck - 25 plus Goosander - 2 female on res. plus a pair on river. Mallard Sparrowhawk - 1 soaring high up (with a missing inner primary on left wing). Coot Moorhen Oystercatcher - 2 on north shore near boathouse. Lapwing - 8/10 on fields west of Crow Tree farm. Common Gull - Just one, a first winter. Black-headed Gull - double figures. Lesser-b b Gull - a fly over group of 7/8, ( could have included some Herrings but trees rather impeded view). Feral pigeon Wood pigeon Wren Dunnock - Many and vocal. Dipper - 1 (heard only), by weir upstream on river. Pied Wagtail - 1. Skylark - Several but "heard only". Blackbird. Songthrush - Quite a few now in full song. Mistle thrush - Also a few in song, 3 seen together near Benny's. Fieldfare - 30 plus, mainly in field near Crow Trees Farm. Redwing - A single individual with above. Robin. Long-tailed Tit - 2/3 in railway cutting. Great Tit Blue Tit Magpie - Rather a lot, - (they surely play havoc with nesting birds in spring?) Jay - 1 in Dip area. Carrion Crow Starling - A scatter, in field with the Fieldfares. House Sparrow. Chaffinch Goldfinch Greenfinch Bullfinch Reed Bunting.

a walk round elton on saturday approx 2.30pm saw what i think was a dunlin on the path in a puddle near the brick building half way round. i've checked my book and i am sure it was a dunlin, was about 10 feet away from it and it took me by surprise, i stopped and watched it for about 20 secs, it wasn't bothered about me and then it was spooked by a dog and flew off.

Elton res Pochard 3 male Tufted Duck 33 GCG 4 (with 2 displaying) Goosander 2 male flew over Oystercather 4 Kestrel
Mallards were all out on the flooded fields with 18 at Coran Stud and 31 on Coney Green flashes.
Coney Green Lapwing 12 Spahawk
No sign of the Little Grebe and still cant find a Little Owl this year!
