Female Merlin (perched in the tree in the middle of the field with the new gate) this morning. I got within 20 yards before it took off over the railway towards the lagoons.
Note: For local birders, there has been a landslip on the east/ETW bank of the canal, just downstream from the locks, which will make it a little tricky walking along the canal bank.

A first for me round here, with 2 Nuthatches calling in trees along Irlam Road, in front of Wellacre College. Also, a high-flying Raven, flying west yesterday. 30+ Rooks have been counted on Wellacre Park recently and a Jackdaw seen along Irlam Road.

Sadly probably not - we did see the pair on the locks with 2 chicks then a day or two later just one then just a single adult Oystercatcher with no sign of any young. The second adult was about but not associating with the first one to any great extent.

Environment Agency have called me back and said they have had a look and confirmed that the loss of fish was due to very low oxygen levels, rather than anything more sinister. A common problem on that particular stretch of water apparently.
Doubtless the Herons were simply cashing in on the easy prey.

Sunday 7pm the unusual sight of 7 Herons all stood together on the wooden banking on the Irlam side of the MSC just north of the locks. 3 others nearby too.
Kingfisher seen crossing the canal (Flixton to Irlam) near the old ferry site.
Of concern is a very large amount of dead fish on the Flixton side of the MSC around the concrete jetty just north of the locks - reported to the Environment Agency as was the sight of a dead swan with a green darvic ring ('CN42') noticed on 21st June.
