I've been following this thread for a bit now and popping to sites too late and not seen any yet apart from a distant flock but just wanted to say thanks to everyone who provides information.
In terms of fruit for the Orrell birds, try the local Sainsbury's. We get stuff sometimes for the bird hospital from there so worth a go.
Also apologies for having a nickname. I just signed up on my phone and only saw the bit about real names as I hit submit and now can't find how to change it. I'll make a new account when I get chance.

We called by the water park on the way home from St Helens late on this afternoon. Well done to the guy who is feeding the birds, still plenty of apples on the trees but only 10 birds present. The garden is actually about 200m south of the car park entrance at the junction of Lodge Road and Moss Road - ta to Ian for help with the directions

This garden has now held considerable numbers of Waxwings for a month due to food being placed out specifically for them so I would ask anyone visiting to please be considerate and keep a sensible distance (preferably the opposite pavement) from the birds.
Numbers ringed at this site have now exceeded 80 (!) and new, unringed, birds continue to be drawn in to the provision of apples and berries for them. Local Sparrowhawks have now realised the potential food source too (the Waxwings, not the apples ) and occasionally disturb the flock which means they're now not always present.
This remarkable saga continues; of one man's seemingly endless dedication to feeding a ravenous flock of Waxwings in his garden, which have now been present for several weeks! This morning hit a new high with over 120 Waxwings present, some birds which have been present continuously over the weeks but many new birds also. With these birds now consuming over 100 apple halfs every couple of days its an expensive and very time consuming business (putting the apples up into the trees in his garden each night) but the rewards for both the garden owner and the birds are obvious. If anyone has access to quantities of apples though and could donate some please do let me know ASAP; this saga is really rather unique and hopefully it will continue for a few weeks more
