3 possibly 4 juvenile Kestrels fledged this week in Piccadilly basin. When I was talking to one of the residents in the street a juvenile walked up next to us and obviously wanted to join in the conversation. I ushshered it back to a safe spot. When the trams are up and running they will be in peril.

There is currently a Parakeet sp flying around the Parsonage Gardens/Bridge Street area of central Manchester.
Can't get much on it but it appears to be grey and white with a conspicuous white wing bar.

Thanks Ian. I suppose it could have been a Sparrowhawk, but seemed a little small for that? It defo was not a Peregrine or Kestrel. It made no attempt to get any of the pigeons & just swirlled on the thermals as I have seen Buzzards do. There was a peregrine much higher up as if watching this larger bird. I just wish I had had my bins. I see someone has seen 5 Buzzards today at The Lowry. Whatever it was it was a magic 10 mins that only I & the pigeons seemed to be aware of in the busy, sunny, city centre.

Soaring Peregrines (and Kestrels) have a very different shape when soaring Kath and could fit your description but Sparrowhawk is also a distinct possibility. Buzzard would display a distinctly and deeply 'fingered' appearance to the primaries (outermost part of the wing- forgive me if you already understand what primaries are ).

I was in Picadilly gardens at 1pm yesterday. The usually gangs of pigeons were on the old Woolworths roof, statues & bits of grass when they all took to the air. A large bird of prey was above us. I thought it might have been one of the peregrines but it looked bigger, its shape was not of a peregrine & I could see distinctive colours under it's wings. The wings were more rounded & the tail more fanned. It made no attempt to dive at the pigeons & just swirled above us in the warm sunshine. Much higher up in the air was a peregrine. This went on for about ten mins then everything went quiet. Have we now got Buzzards in the city? I see that one was seen in the Northern Quarter in Feb.

That's a refreshingly pleasing and encouraging attitude Luke as like you say, it's very easy to try too hard to convince ourselves sometimes and at the end of the day we've just got to let some sightings we can't fully nail go

Like I say it was difficult as it was over the other side of the road. Thinking back it did seem quite 'rounded' but I suppose you can try too hard to convince yourself haha. The white pale wings was the thing that stood out to me but I guess I'll never know.

Quick question... What's the likelihood of a Med Gull finding itself in Manchester city centre? Saw a single gull from my work window today, never came close enough to get full details, but it appeared to have no black in its primaries at all, was very pale and and had a funny awkward flight pattern.
I'm no expert on Med Gulls and the only one have seen was not an adult, but it seemed distinctively different.

The patch of grass outside the new Council HQ (One First Street), has been colonised by about a dozen Canada Geese. It's nice to see them in this new context - they look superb in repose and quite comical when they waddle in pairs down the pathways, without so much as a by-your-leave for the people walking alongside them.
Am hoping for some winter thrushes on the patch once the season turns!
