My first visit here, parked at Fir Tree Flash then walked for what seemed like miles with no idea where I was!, eventually heard then saw a Grasshopper Warbler(none so far at Elton) and on returning to the car park a Cuckoo was seen perched on top of a Hawthorn. Cheers Ian

Further to Bernard's posts - over the northern half of the site (0930 7- 1330hrs) Cuckoo near stock pond and possibly a second songster just north of Tinker Joe's Flash; at least 10 Whitethroats in song; and a Garden Warbler in fine voice at the base of the ruck, by the track leading from the choked pond towards New Water.

morning dog walk- light but constant rain 1 blackcap singing and showing well 1 other heard only, 2 wheatear drinking from rain water puddles on track between new road and diggle flash, 2 chiffchaff, several willow warbler, 1 goldfinch, 1 long tailed tit, great tit,blue tit, dunnock,robin,blackbird,skylark,reed bunting. magpie,carrion crow, wood pigeon, diggle flash- c20 swift, 3 sand martin, 5 swallow, 1 house martin all hawking over water and nearby field, 8 tufted duck, 9 adult + 10( broods of 5, 3 and 2) young coot, 2 adult little grebe with 3 young + 2 more adults, 3 great crested grebe 2 doing courtship dance including sharing weed ( sounds like the young couple round the corner from me lol), 2 mute swan, 7 black headed gull.

Having read Bernard's post, what I thought at the time (approx 10.15 ) to be a Marsh Harrier fly over . With only a brief view from behind as it flew over ruck and out of view, I was not confident enough to mention it on my previous post. So could still be in the area.

Marsh harrier flew across C7 and C8 heading west @ 09-40 direct flight didn't hesitate or circle anywhere whilst in view, cuckoo heard distantly so presumably was in or around Pony enclosure and heard at same time as Gordon we were out at similar times but i was on opposite side around diggle flash/new road area, 3 swallow, willow warbler, 1 whitethroat, 1m blackcap giving excellent views down to less than 10yds, 2 chiffchaff, blue tit, great tit, blackbird,robin,dunnock, diggle flash- family party of 5 little grebe both parents feeding young + 1 more adult seen and 1 more heard only, 8 tufted duck, 9 coot, 5 black headed gulls, 2 great crested grebe, 2 moorhen,2 mute swan, 1 mallard, 1 lesser black backed gull, reed warbler sining, 1 long tailed tit again exiting reed bed from same place seen 3 days on bounce now,

diggle flash- c20 swift, 3 sand martin, 5 swallow, 1 house martin all hawking over water and nearby field, 8 tufted duck, 9 adult + 10( broods of 5, 3 and 2) young coot, 2 adult little grebe with 3 young + 2 more adults, 3 great crested grebe 2 doing courtship dance including sharing weed ( sounds like the young couple round the corner from me lol), 2 mute swan, 7 black headed gull.
3 site year firsts for me today, swift, house martin and wheatear, although between Gordon and Scott i know all 3 have already been recorded on site,
cuckoo calling from behind stock pond and then from trees behind school ( i could hear a cuckoo from home in this area @ 05-10 this morning), 1f stonechat, 2 grasshopper warbler heard only, 2 whitethroat, 1 chiffchaff, several willow warbler, 1 sedge warbler, great tit,blue tit, dunnock,wren,blackbird, magpie, wood pigeon, carrion crow, 2 pheasant, decent numbers skylark and reed bunting, 2 canada geese over, 2 gadwall over ( i saw a pair later on a small pond @ barlows farm presuming same birds)
diggle flash- 12 tufted duck, 9 adult coot + 8 young broods of 5 and 3, 2 mute swan, 2 great crested grebe, 2 mallard, 5 black headed gull, 1 little grebe chilling out lied on bank within a foot of a mute swan also chilling out, 2 reed warbler.

cuckoo calling @10-35 from trees between C7 horse field and new road quite loud but i couldn't spot it, 2 swallow over hose ld, 1 grasshopper warbler reeling from C7 1 other from C9, skylark,reed bunting, 2 chiffchaff,willow warbler, 2 whitethroat, 1 lesser whitethroat, great tit, blue tit, pheasant heard only, blackbird,robin,dunnock, wren, magpie, carrion crow, wood pigeon,

double figures skylark and reed bunting, 5 grasshopper warbler heard (3 C8, 2C9) but only a brief glimpse of 1, 2 whitethroat, plenty of willow warbler, only 1 chiffchaff, great tit, blue tit, 1 buzzard, 1 kestrel hunting over C9 nr top of new road they've been scarce over here lately, 1 m stonechat, 7 meadow pipit, 1 pheasant seen running across new road 4 others heard only, robin,wren, dunnock,blackbird, magpie,carrion crow, wood pigeon, 3 goldfinch, cuckoo gave a single call from C8 @ 10-30,
diggle flash- 12 black headed gull, 10 tufted duck, 7 coot, 2 mute swan, 1 moorhen,1 mallard, 1 great crested grebe, 1 adult little grebe with 1 juvenile just inside reedbed so presume others were in thicker cover. 1 other adult little grebe on opposite side of flash.
