Damn, turned back for the train home a bit too soon! Third time lucky(ish) though - Yellow Wagtail(male) - Little Woolden Moss in the field east of the Glaze, on the north side of the track round to Jepson's/Little Woolden Hall. It was in a muddy dip in the field in line with the small circular pool. A Spotted Flycatcher is more likely to turn up in the top hedge at Strinesdale again before autumn is over than a Yellow Wagtail, so I'll take it.
Otherwise, c40 Lapwing at the eastern end of the eastern pools on the reserve, Common Buzzard over the western pools, Kestrel from the 'hide', several Willow Warbler, several Long-tailed Tits, Wood Pigeons, Pied Wagtails, 5 Linnets. 12 Black-headed Gulls, 2 Herring Gulls, 9 Lesser Black-backed Gulls, 37 Common Gulls, 2 immature Starlings, 1 Carrion Crow and assorted pigeons on ploughed field on Cadishead Moss (No.28 I think), 5 Swallows mobbing a Kestrel S over No 33, then 2 juvenile Swallows and an adult on wires S of Rose Bank Farm.
Of Interest? from 1st and 2nd visits:
13th July. 2 Whitethroat, track from Moss Lane to LWM LWTNR, Common Buzzard (reserve), Stone Chat (Little Woolden Moss), possible Red Kite (distant east from the 'hide'), male Yellowhammer on northern edge of LWM LWTNR where Moss Lane becomes a track, (29 species)
17th August. LWM LWTNR Common Buzzard, Kestrel, Marsh Harrier (female, no moult, GM list 210), 2/3 Hobbies (adult through low and fast south just east of the 'hide' at 13.29, then shortly after two birds hawking along the eastern pools until away east at 14.05; not sure if the first bird doubled back or if both of the pair were new). A female Kestrel, 24 Lesser Black-backed Gulls and at least 1 Herring Gull were feeding on insects in the same area at 14.54. 2 very pale headed Mistle Thrushes on Cadishead Moss puzzled for a second or two, as did 5 immature Blackbirds with a distinctly reddish tinge as they flew away from a well-laden Rowan! I guess due to the abundance of standing water on the reserve this year (oh how I have wished for such circumstances in recent summers when 'drought' appears to be the common currency in these times) the reserve is 'blessed' with a super abundance of 'Mozzies' and for me, unlike the bites of the Horseflies,...they are awful...I must admit!
Then again what a GREAT food source for our beleaguered birds!
