9.30-1.30pm 44 species seen. 4 snipe (over canal heading west) 1 goosander (over res heading east) 1 little owl 4 lapwing (in field near crow trees farm) 1 kingfisher ( going down canal at bennys) 22 great crested grebe (on res + 2 on withins) 12 tufted duck ( on res + 11 on withins) 5 cormorants (constantly being chased off by 2 chaps in a boat,dont like them there do they ! ) 2 grey wagtails (1 below withins, 1 at bennys) 1 sparrowhawk 3 reed buntings 1 great spotted woodpecker several meadow pipits moving around at least 8 swallows knocking about + all usual birds around

7.30-10.30 partly with Ian Peters, on res 1 Little Grebe near Boathouse, 2 Swallow and 5 Meadow Pipit over. Spent around 1 hr in total looking for Nuthatch behind hospital but no sign. Kingfisher in dip. Good luck next week Brian Cheers Ian

0700 till 0930 with ian peters and trev 1 green woodpecker found by ian flying across the creek, it continued down to capsticks calling, we all saw it well on top of the res wall, it was then flushed by a dog walker and flew towards the marsh between withins and old hall farm, 2nd record this year of this rare elton bird. 1 wheatear nr pumphouse 5 teal over 2x2 goosander over 1 kingfisher.

Black tern still present at 7.00 pm when i left, a very mobile bird as per usual Black terns using the whole res hunting flys, not favouring any particular area,

Black tern also slightly earlier at 15.47 working along dam between overflow and sluice house. Also black cap Hinds heard Greater Spotted Woodpecker in dip and a Kingfisher withins res.

Arrived 7.05 a.m. at 7.20 2 TREE PIPITS over the pump house calling, confirmed ID by playing CD of call when I returned home. A GM 1st for me and my 150th Elton tick. Brian was on site but unfortunately missed them by less than 10 minutes. Also constant passage of Swallow and House Martin with smaller numbers of Meadow Pipit. 1 Wheatear on the wall and 3 Snipe over. Rapters included Peregrine, Sparrowhawk and 2 Kestrel. Finally a flyover Raven. Cheers Ian forgot to mention that small numbers of Linnets were also passing through

3.15-7pm getting caught in the rain
1 hobby (3.35pm just past crow trees heading towards radcliffe) 1 little owl (crow trees) 2 kestrel 1 sparrowhawk 15 lapwings (near crow trees farm) 7 teal (withins) 14 tufted duck (on res) 1 wigeon (on res) 1 grey wagtail 3 pied wagtail 1 jay 4 reed bunting flock off around 500 starling in fields below old hall farm,also a fox running through the same field. nice flock off at least 30 greenfinches (near bennys) swallows & house martins over plus all usual birds around.

thanks ian, that puts me on 121,so need 10 to break the record, had an excellent september so far with 7 year ticks, osprey, stock dove, greenshank, 1 undisclosed, golden plover, rook and green sandpiper, still think 130 will be difficult to beat but i now have a chance.

1 juv common tern, 5 widgeon, 3 gooseanders over, 2 kestrel, 1 spotted flycatcher in bushes close to benny area
also 1 greenshank made a short appearance, calling from opposite side to pumphouse near the pylons, i managed a quick picture, i saw Brian near the pumphouse and walked over, i hope you got that, greenshank on the other side just then, luckily they were all on the ball and got the bird, not an easy bird to get there, hard work for waders at present with the high water levels, another tick for Brian, well done
