I visited yesterday...light was awful and visited today with Ivan Ellison and light was twice as good as yesterday but still very bad:(. I took some maggotts, the Dulin and the Grey Plover had a good feed. I sat in a wet hole just to make my arthritic knees worse but was rewarded by the Grey Plover coming so close I could pat it on the head! Sadly the bird appears to have had an injury, there is blood on the feathers around the nape so let's hope it only picked up a scratch.

Interesting observation! I've been reading, just today, an old paper from a 1930s issue of British Birds about Dunlin "paging" plovers. Whilst it's well-known behaviour on the breeding grounds, the author (Clifford Oakes) observed Dunlin following both Golden and Grey Plovers at wintering sites and on passage on the Lancs coast.
Seems we have an influx of both Dunlin and Grey Plover at the moment - perhaps pushed westwards by cold weather on the continent? Waiting for them to turn up on my patch!

Water Rail sightings are as stated very few compared to last year when they popped up from the dip to above crow tree farm. Very odd. Could t really be mink that has led to such a collapse? Mink have been seen around the outflow and on the res for many years. Could it not be we've had a mild winter so far compared to the last two years?? Hope this is not a collapse of this species here so will have to keep eys peeled.

Yeah, makes sense, it does seem very quiet, also the reeds dont seem as thick as last year and not giving as much cover, last year it was all the activity caused by the feeding moorhens enjoying the extra food i put out that seemed to bring out the Rail also to have a look what all the fuss is about, today just one moorhen and no rail, i might have a good look further along the canal, cheers Simon, best Den

Hi Dennis, There seems to be a distinct lack of birds around the Benny's area so far this year. Normally in these conditions there would be 7+ Moorhen around the outflow but ive only seen a maximum of two and the confiding Water Rail from last winter certainly doesn't seem to be around. I can only assume the mink is still decimating the canal area, although nobody has reported seeing it recently.
