Went for a peek at the Orrell Water Park birds today at around 12-30 and saw 2 Waxwings in a tree above the entrance. . Spotted a small bird feeding on an apple in the park, turns out it was a Female Blackcap. Went into the park to the feeding station to watch the Brambling and 1 Siskin. Returned to park entrance and counted 60 Waxwings in the trees in the park. They eventually came down to the garden to feed and were joined by many many more, not a chance of counting but easily 4 times the 60 I had counted

Thanks to everybody who has posted about Orrell Water Park - I finally got myself over there this morning and what a fantastic hour I spent pretty much surrounded by Waxwings. I met three gentlemen (presumably one was Peter Alker) retrieving two birds from netting, and was able to get a really close look at the birds - a really unexpected privilege. They estimate anything up to about 150 birds, and they are certainly feeding voraciously. Lovely photo ops in the soft morning light. I duly left a donation for the apples. Wondering just how long they will stick around: till the food runs out or the easterly winds swing back into the SW?
I'm always a little shy of appearing with my long lens in a residential area but this situation is ideal, because there is food on the edge of the public land as well as in the private garden, so a good proportion of the birds can be seen actually in the boundary of the public park.

Still at at least 120 Waxwings in the garden by the entrance to Orrell Water Park this morning.
Peter Alker would also like to convey his very sincere thanks to the photographer who dropped £10 off at his house for apples and the other person who dropped off a load of apples. These birds are getting though an astonishing 20 kilos of apples per day, which works out per bird as practically twice their own body weight per day (no they don't weigh 10 kilos each either) and information from the Grampian Ringing Group who feed in a similar fashion, informs that they could happily stay until early May before departing (not discounting Mike Duckham's information of some staying in Wales until early June!!)! Either way, these Orrell birds continue to draw much admiration from birders and the general public too who enjoy watching them and Peter has informed me that the decision to continue feeding will now be done on a day to day basis as funds allow. If anyone fancies asking their local supermarket for any discarded apples please let me know as Peter's local have done similar when they have any

150+ again this morning in the garden by the entrance to Orrell Water Park this morning.
Unfortunately, after two months or so of providing these birds with daily food their current numbers are forcing the house owner to cease the provision of apples due to the escalating costs. It's a huge shame as the birds will obviously move on for good and they have provided so much enjoyment for so many whilst they have been here
